Intriguing Start to a New Manga, Would Recommend!
by Michael -
The central story to Not Your Idol is a lot darker than most Shojo titles that I'm used to, but it's refreshing to see a more serious, psychologically suspenseful type of manga in this genre. The first hints of romance that might eventually develop between the two leads are cute and make me want to see them develop further.
While the manga can fumble slightly with the bluntness of its messages about the evils of sexism, sexual assault, victim blaming, and obsessive fan cultures, the willingness to try and make statements that stick about these problems are commendable, and make the manga deeper than just another shy girl meets outgoing guy romance.
It's a good read, and I hope it continues into something great!
Volume 01 Contains Chapters 01 - 03
by Chelsea
Chapters 01 - 03: This looks like it is going to be a really interesting story with complex characters and an intriguing plot. The story is a but darker than a lot of Shojo Beat stories but it is also classified as a drama & a mystery. I look forward to seeing what happens next and learning more about all the different characters.
Surprisingly serious for a shojo style manga
by Hailey -
The art style is unmistakably shojo but the themes of this series so far are incredibly important and serious and handled in an awesome way, and it's great. I was a bit skeptical at first at how they were going to handle the content, due to the style, but I will say I was pleasantly surprised. My one concern is the pacing of this series. The ending was amazing and really has me on the edge of my seat, but it seemed more like an ending for a later volume? Unless this series isn't expecting to be long. It doesn't seem rushed at all, but volume 2 is surely going to reveal the stalker. If there's more after that, I can't imagine what else they would possibly include. Either way I highly recommend this series which includes some really powerful scenes and great lines, my favorite being "idols are apologetically feminine."
Though it took a while to arrive, it was well worth the wait. The book was in perfect condition too and really packaged with care.
A suspenseful Shoujo? Love it!
by Lola -
Wow! I absolutely loved this first of all, and can't wait for the continuation of it. We are given characters that are very three-dimensional. Most shoujo titled mangas hardly account for real-life problems, but I think this manga does just that. If you are into or just want to read a shoujo where it's darker in terms of story I'd highly recommend this.
An idol’s trauma
by Naydelin -
This is manga is one of the best I read by far. It tells the truth of what some idols go through and how the main character Nina Kamiyama copes with *spoilers* being harm by a fan. There is a also romance in it the two main character are amazing. The one thing I’m sad about is that it’s on a hiatus so for those who want to pick this book up there are two volumes with a cliffhanger between the two main character. I recommend picking this up.
