A Triumphant Piece of Classic Period Anime!

by -

I just got done watching this for the very first time and I have to say I was quite entertained. Let me first say that I am not really an avid anime watcher; I blind-bought this recently because it was on sale and every time the movie was brought up in past conversations, people tell me, "Oh my god even if you're not a fan of anime you should definitely check it out, it's freakin' AWESOME!" Finally I saw how right they had been all along.

An action movie with horror elements laced in, this fast-paced thrillride delivers everything from gorgeous artwork, fascinating demons, heart-racing one-on-one battles...it's a shame they don't make films like this anymore. As I've said, I don't normally watch anime but Ninja Scroll is, rest-assured, a movie that's pushed me one step closer to getting me into the habit!

If you like sword of the stranger

A classic action movie with top notch animation, old school violence, and a protagonist with plenty of swagger, Ninja blade is one of the best Ninja movies out there.

An oldie but goodie

I originally picked this one up because of all the praise it gets and hear that it was quite a few people’s gateway into anime. I also hear that it’s up there with Akira and Ghost in the Shell. After watching this movie and in all honesty, it’s good but something was missing to get me really invested with it. Maybe it takes a couple of watches to really appreciate it like Akira did for me. I will say I did like the artwork and battle scenes though. And it did remind me of shows like Fist of the North Star, Naruto, and even Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. In all, I can see this definitely being someone’s gateway anime and I wouldn’t mind watching it again someday.

Bafflingly overrated and pointlessly violent.

I realize this movie is popular with many Anime fans, but I stand firmly by this rating. First of all, the movie is too overly reliant on shock value to the point that whatever story it tries to tell gets buried in it. Secondly, its storyline is not all that interesting or special, with nary a sympathetic or, frankly, even compelling character worth caring about. The love subplot in particular falls flat on its face because there is no major build up to it and feels rushed. Finally, the film is needlessly misogynistic. A female character who is poisonous to everyone she comes in contact with could have been an interesting character, but she gets assaulted two times for no compelling reason and has to use her sex appeal to save our hero, which I find infuriating. I know I'm going to get flak for this, but I just plain do not like this movie, and I cannot recommend it.

A classic

A classic anime movie that still holds up today. I've seen it like 3 or 4 times by now and I love watching it every time. I know that there is a little bit of a nostalgia factor as I first watched it as a kid, but I definitely think first time watchers can enjoy this movie too.
