Better then you'd think

by -

I originally thought to watch this because I had never seen a proper vampire anime before, and this seemed like a decent candidate. A moody and mature main character, good art style, promise of romance, and mystery.

The first four episodes were released as an OVA, and while more gory and sexual then the rest of the series, I do wish that the additional eight had kept the tone, because then this series would've been great instead of good.

Pros:
-great music
-good animation
-most of the episodes have a decent to good story
-interesting main character
-well developed backstory for main character
-conclusion to light romance teased between said character and girl whom he shows interest

Cons:
-rushed ending
-too much of a monster-of-the-week feel for the middle episodes [could've been put to better use by focusing on the lead and his co workers]
-shock nudity in episode 4
-you'll be left with wanting more and then isn't any

A good watch depending who you are

As the review below mentioned this "complete series" is not mentioned to be an OVA + the rest of the series. I didn't notice this as a kid but looking at it now it is fairly obvious when the OVA ends and a new director takes over. To give both directors some credit though this series is actually based off an eroge game from the early 90s of a similar name. The OVA episodes from my understanding end where the game ends and the later episodes are set after. Because they try to fit a games plot into 4 episodes the show seems to assume you know everything that's going on already and doesn't really explain it to you so this was definitely meant as a work for people who enjoyed the game and not new fans.

As for the DVD itself my only issue is how during the first disk I had many moments where the episode clipped like an old TV would do with a VHS that was acting up. I wonder if this DVD was just recorded from the VHS releases which makes sense but still something to keep in mind.
