About Night on the Galactic Railroad DVD

Night on the Galactic Railroad: Japan's most beloved children's book is now a hauntingly beautiful feature film.

What is true happiness? For Giovanni, the answer is as far away as the stars. Mired in hardship, the young kitten faces problems that should be unknown to someone his age. At school, his classmates mock and ridicule him, and after the bell rings, Giovanni toils at a job to earn enough money for bread. Then at home, instead of being taken care of by his mother, he must take care of her.

The sole bright spot is that of the Festival of Stars, where he hopes to run into Campanella, his only friend. When they finally meet up, however, it isn't while looking up at the stars, but rather traveling amongst them... as the Galactic Railroad whisks the two away for parts unknown!

Night on the Galactic Railroad is adapted from the novel written by famous Japanese children's author, Kenji Miyazawa. Born in 1896, Miyazawa grew up during a tumultuous time in Japan's history, and his humanist sensibilities feature most prominently in this work. While the movie features delightful cat characters, the symbolism and deeper meaning of the film can touch the young and old alike. This story is one that every child in Japan must experience in school, and now, you can too!

A nice film

by -

It has that ghibli like feel to it, and the animation is nice for its time for a non ghibli film. The story is of the slow pace variety, but the way the scenes fold out its almost like several little stories wrapped in one, almost like any series where the main characters are on a journey and meet new people and learn something new each time. It has a kind of surreal way about it and is great for those who like philosophical films (or something like that) or just want something different. I only saw the dub but I think it's good. Overall this is a unique film and had a sense of mysticism that you hardly see anymore unless you really look for it. For anime buffs who like to look for a wide variety of films and series to experience this is one film you definitely should try out.

A symbolic movie with cats

by -

This is one of those movies you would watch in an English class and then write a paper on it. It’s symbolic and everything means something. There are those who love these kinds of movies and others who may not like them. I’m in the middle of it. It depends on the movie, but a lot of times, I just like to turn my brain off and enjoy a movie. By doing that, this movie is quite slow paced and a bit tiring, like you could fall asleep to it. By the second half of the movie I turned my brain on and started to analyze it. In doing that overall, it’s not a bad movie, you just have to be in the right mood to watch it. It doesn’t get too hard to analyze, but it is one that would probably require another watch or some reading up on to fully grasp the story. As for me, it wasn’t quite my kind of movie, but I did enjoy the art and music of it. And the dub is pretty good too.
