As usual, watch only in Japanese or don't watch at all.

Millions of Ghibli fans like me have been deeply disappointed in the dubs Disney has done for these movies, simply because they are horrible. Miscast celebrities, phoned-in performances, emotionally flat, and utterly guilty of bastardizing the source material. MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS is no different. James Belushi cannot voice act, and neither can Molly Shannon. Only Tress MacNeille is qualified, but even then her performance is below what she can do. And this is from someone who's a fan of traditional voice actors. Streamline would have done a much better job dubbing this, as they were the only ones who really knew Ghibli. (I should know, their dubs are unanimously superior to the Disney trainwrecks.) As it is, watch this movie in Japanese and SKIP the HORRIBLE Disney dub. Otherwise don't bother watching at all.

A forgotten Ghibli gem coming to Blu Ray in America at last.

Isao Takahata's offbeat and esoteric but utterly charming MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS is probably the only Disney-licensed Ghibli film that didn't receive a proper BD release when the Mouse House still had them, but GKids, thankfully, is taking care of that. I don't consider this film as memorable as his tearjerker GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, but this IS a funny, heartfelt film. The animation style is a perfect compliment to what is essentially a random series of stories loosely strung together in a film. The Ghibli movies have looked consistently fantastic in HD, and hopefully this will be no different.

It's been awhile since I've seen the Disney dub, but I don't have any major problems with it. Belushi is a hoot as Mr. Yamada, and the rest of the cast turns in equally fine performances. Tress is great, but I also loved the performances of the kids as well. Only issue is that some of the jokes don't translate as well, but otherwise the dub is honestly fine. Either way, great film.

Covering the BD-DVD Release

Perhaps because of poor sales in America, MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS never got a BD release from Disney, but thankfully that is no longer the case. Thanks to the folks at GKids, the film is treated with care on HD. As usual, the film looks terrific, and the audio tracks are excellently presented. But perhaps the best feature of the new edition is a NTV special which details more about the production MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS. And of course, it's nice to have the Behind-the-Microphone feature for those who enjoy learning about how dubs are made or hearing the voice actors talk about their work on the film. Even if you own the film on DVD, this is a terrific upgrade.
