Very Well Made

by -

This is a very well made Anime that even though it was made in 2007, it holds up very well for today. The animation is great and action is well animated even by today's standards. The dub is not horrible. The story is good, but not anything earth shattering. Everything was just done well.

One of the best female lead protagonists in anime

Balsa Yonsa is a spear wielding warrior, that reminds me of other strong female lead protagonists that are smart, skilled, decisive, and confident. But at times reveal a sentimental side of their character as well. Such anime shows as "Claymore", "Michiko & Hatchin", "Ghost In the Shell SAC" and "Violent Evergarden" come to mind showcasing such strong female leads.

Besides Balsa's skills as a spear master, she is also skilled in martial arts and travels the land to save 8 lives to atone for her past mistakes. If she saves the Emperor's son...it will make the eighth and final life she saves in atonement.

I really enjoyed this show, except for the inter-dimensional rift aspects of the anime, it plays out realistically to me. The combat is believable, her resolve to never kill while combating the Emperor's guards, while having no problem killing those strange dimensional creatures are pretty good action sequences for an older anime series.

Enjoy in 1080p / 16:9 format.

An Unexpected Gem!! Don't Skip This One If You Enjoy Grounded Stories!

by -

What I love the most about this series is how despite being a fantasy drama filled with magic, Moribito still feels wholly grounded with two feet planted firmly on the earth---a feat that most fantasies simply fail to pull off! While the overall plot is not all that unique, the characters & world that you are dropped into are thoroughly flushed out. Even the minor characters come across as individuals with their own lives, priorities, and concerns---not just one-dimensional NPCs to either support or oppose the main characters. By the end of the 26 episodes, I grew fond of many outside the main cast! I also deeply appreciated the meaningful storytelling and cinematic techniques they did in Moribito! Such techniques helped make the slow yet deliberate build towards the climax well worth the patience! And a note on the animation quality; while it does show its age a bit, you can see that the animators at Production I.G put their hearts into this one, too, including the background art!
