Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ Collection 1 Blu-ray

ZZ gundam is something I highly recommend, it has good action,good animation (especially this blu ray version),some funny moments, and good stories. It may immediately follow zeta gundam, but I think if you are new to gundam it won't confuse you.

I admit that I bought this solely because it's Gundam on Blu Ray. I had heard the negativity and figured I could satisfy my curiosity while supporting Gundam releases on Blu in one fell swoop. The first 17 episodes are very strange and uneven. I get that the cast is primarily children who've grown up with no adult supervision and an army of naive soldiers. Still, things do get a bit slapstick from time-to-time. Genuine character moments are slipped in during some of the more wacky scenes; the moment Bright realizes he's a terrible father is one of most poignant.

The animation and character designs are some of the best from the 80s; most of the cast look very Macross which is a good thing. The Blu Ray transfer is very good here. I think it's a notch below the Zeta discs but very close to that level. The show is better than its reputation and I look forward to the second half.

The third part of the original (and true) Gundam TV Trilogy offers a lighter tone (at first) than Gundam or Zeta. A minor Tomino tradition was for him to follow hard drama with lighter (Ideon to Xabungle anyone?), and the first half is indeed in that vein. Picture the Our Gang Kids (complete with junkyard) becoming the new crew of the Argama and you might have an idea. The comedy is genuinely funny and universal. No need to be Japanese to get it. The character and mecha designs are some of the best in the saga, and this is the one that introduces the massively popular Elpeo Pulu (although Leina Ashta gives her a run for the money in cuteness). But things take a turn as we reach episodes 20 and 21. Two punches to the gut that hit hard. Arguably the most accessible Gundam series and one of the most enjoyable.

For those that want English dubs, and expect it, you will be disappointed.

For those following the UC trip, this is one of the last in the long UC-era Anime, and arguably more light hearted in tone. It has more funny/silly moments than either MSG or Z, and there isn't nearly as many dead/wounded main characters coming out of this series. This is more apparent in the first half, included in this set, than in the latter half, where the more serious pieces take place.

Video quality is good, with remastered video included. There is still grain and similar artifacts of being released on film, but this is minimized and still maintains the look and feel of cell based Anime.

Audio quality is good, but "just" stereo. Don't expect sweeping battles with lots of aural action.

ZZ makes its North American debut in good style.

The American Blu Ray release is a great addition to any Gundam fan's collection. I purchased a DVD copy of the series while stationed in Japan a few years ago. The American release exceeds my expectations in quality and entertainment. Nothing is lost from the original and the Blu Ray version offers profound refinement in sound and image on your HD television.

The story and mood take a slight twist when compared with typical themes in the saga. Some die hard fans of Wing, Zeta, and Stardust Memory may find fault with its slower, more boy-ish lead into a war story.

Beyond the less hardened and serious approach, this entry still offers plenty for fans of all types to latch onto. I would not recommended this saga as entry point for anyone unfamiliar with the franchise.

What is Gundam ZZ? Depending on who you ask, you will get someone who either hates this series with a passion, or loves it. I will be honest, this series is a strange one. While I did enjoy this series, I did not know how to take it. It does not feel like Gundam or Zeta with all the comedic moments and near episodic story telling. But towards the middle of the series, it picks up and begins to feel more like Zeta, but not quite... but it does manage to hit home.

This set goes to episode 22, a few episodes after it picks up. After watching it, I really grew to enjoy the series a lot.

The transfer to Bluray really did make the series look great though. The mechs are beautiful if sometimes odd in design and seeing them in HD was just great!

Theme song is to catchy though... man that was stuck in my head for days...

Regardless of the mix reviews I heard, I gave ZZ Gundam a watch out of curiosity. I'll admit that I actually enjoyed this one despite what people say.

Well what can you say about Gundam ZZ? It starts off silly, but about halfway through gets serious in the tone of a lighter version of Zeta Gundam. It's Universal Century, so if you are not up on Newtypes and the history you should start with those. This Blu Ray is great looking, subtitling is good, no technical issues for me, and the show is one of my favorites.

For a lot of Gundam fans, it took a very long time to finally get ZZ outside of Japan. I can confirm that if you're looking at quality, this release is the same as the Japanese BD release with only 1 change. The insert song "Z-Kiza o Koete", Zeta Gundam's OP Theme, is missing from episode 1. "Hoshizora no Believe", Zeta Gundam's ED Theme, does play in episode 20 probably because the sequence had already been mixed and would have needed to be redubbed in Japan. Outside of that, there are no audio edits. The OP and ED sequences are there this time unlike the Zeta releases.

The release is subtitled only. No dub was produced in the past for ZZ or for this version. There may be a re-release with a dub later but rightstuf did not seem to find it worth it to produce a new dub. If those things don't bother you then you'll love this set.

First off, the blu-ray transfer looks great although the animation is about on the same level as Zeta and is good for the time it was produced. The story is an odd duck, especially in the first half of the series. I was hoping for more after Zeta, but the leads aren't as good as other Gundam series and I couldn't get as invested in the series. Still worth a watch though, especially to get the whole Universal Century experience.

What can I say? ZZ Gundam rips. Watch it. Tell your friends about it. Get a tattoo of Roux Louka's little shooting star rainbow thing. Anything less would be letting yourself be weighed down by Earth's gravity.

Going into Double Zeta I had heard a lot of negative opinions about the show. The only bad opinion I can agree with is that the first 1/3 of the show is a little slow and gives you very little reason to care about this group of kids. But I have to say about halfway through the show everything really kicks off. I started to really like all of the characters and the action gets crazy. I appreciated that none of the girls in this group play the victim part and need to be saved by our main character. Instead they come flying in with guns blazing to save the day just as much as the guys. Sadly this series was never dubbed into English if that's important to you. All in all I wish the beginning of this series was stronger because I honestly think it's just as good as Zeta and could have surpassed it in popularity.
