An excellent condensed version of the TV series.

by

Much like Zeta Gundam's "A New Translation," this is a film trilogy that covers the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series. There are some minor differences between this and the TV series, but unlike A New Translation, the ending and what happens is largely the same.

This is definitely a worthy purchase if you enjoy a great war story, great characters, and giant mecha. The story of Amuro Ray and the White Base is one of legend, and seeing how they ultimately survive is a tale worth learning.

A great Trilogy.

I´m a huge fan of the original series, but I believe this is the best way to introduce the new generations to the original show. It just look great! The editing of the series is very good too.
A must own. Excelente.

A faster way to experience Gundam 0079

Although some of my favorite parts of Gundam were cut from these films, they are still amazing in their own right. The closing songs are some of my favorites.

If you are looking to start into the Gundam granchise, this is the release you should get.

This was my introduction to the Gundam Universe and my first Rightstuf product. The image quality is outstanding and it is in my opinion the best way to start Gundam as a franchise. I was so impressed with the HD transfer that at times you forget is a 80s show. Just would like to point out that on this release there is no English Dub and the subtitles are yellow colored. Please Give Gundam trilogy a chance and you will get hooked to the real robot genre!

A great start to one of the greatest sci-fi worlds ever!

Mobile Suit Gundam is a tightly paced war story that follows inexperienced soldiers (mostly children) from their peaceful space colony to the front lines of humanity's most destructive war ever. It broke new ground in animation & science fiction, becoming a global phenomenon.

The films’ shorter runtime leads to several great moments & much of the subtle character development that Gundam relishes in being lost. However, the movies make a point to introduce some important concepts much earlier than in the series, making it a tradeoff between thematic presentation and character depth.
My only major issue with this set is that it opts to use the audio mix for the 1999 re-release of the trilogy rather than the original theatrical audio. For anyone who may have seen the films prior to this, the dialogue and music may be different than you remember.

If you aren’t ready to commit to a 42 episode TV series, this is the perfect entry into the world of Gundam.

Great way to jump into the franchise, or revisit the original story

by

Let's get this out of the way: If Gundam is Star Wars (which it isn't), this entire trilogy would be A New Hope, and it stands equal. You want to start somewhere? This is the movie trilogy that launched the franchise.

As for the movies themselves, I'm still surprised how well these fit together thematically.
Negatives:
No English dub
The movies are overstuffed (I think each is more than 2 hours?)
Moment to moment feels a little disconnected, even as they fit together reasonably well thematically (makes sense; it's a recut of a 42 episode tv show, w/ each one having its own relatively stand alone plot)
A lot of good content got left on the cutting room floor (Icelina's story in particular)

Final verdict: Highly recommended
...but I recommend the original tv cut of the series more. You get more content, natural stopping points between episodes, and a very excellent dub for such old animation.

But when you can't do an entire tv show, the movies are still a nice alternative.

The original classic trilogy in a beautifully simple set!

by

I was a baby when this series came out, but thanks to a nice Gundam special at Right Stuf last week, I finally had the chance to see what all the fuss was about all these years! It didn't disappoint. This changed the landscape of anime forever. I knew it would be interesting in an anime history context, but I never expected it to rope me in so much. There is so much depth, and emotion with the characters, as they struggle with serious consequences to the their actions. It felt so "modern," in style, that I often forgot it was a 70's anime!

Some might complain about the lack of special features (and trailers,) but I honestly welcomed it. I prefer art to speak for itself, without the need for commentaries etc telling me what to think and feel. (A dub would have been nice though.)

Warning: Contains MSG!

by

As my headline warns, this set contains Mobile Suits Gundam, (in all it's original glory). Like so many others, this film series has sent me down an unforgettable rabbit hole into the Gundam universe.

This is the condensed film trilogy that really got the ball rolling for the franchise since it's debut in 1979 and still holds up great today. Highly recommended!
