Mermaids, cannibalism, immortality...oh my!

This manga intrigued me because mermaids are not portrayed as these wonderful creatures, and in fact cause our MCs a long and difficult life. The first volume, like the second, is composed of several short stories tying into a larger one, and these stories do not follow a linear timeline (which does not bother me, but might throw off some folks). Takahashi does an excellent job of storytelling and as always her art is top notch!

If you want to see where Rumiko's folklore roots began pick this title up! The ground work is laid for a superstitious and dark tale of what happens to people who eat mermaid flesh. It's a dark and beautiful story with some of her peak retro art style in a short easy to read two volume collector edition format.
