This is How It's Done

What an absolute treat to finally have it this on blu-ray. I can't imagine it ever looking any better (incidentally, there's a short but informative feature on the restoration process). The 5.1 mix was quite impressive as well with perfectly timed subtitles.

It's clear that they put a lot of thought and work into this release. I had no issues with the disc and the reversible cover was a nice touch. Well done, Discotek.

Absolutely worth the purchase for Otomo and anime history fans.

I highly recommend the Memories Blu Ray! If you are a fan of Katsuhiro Otomo, his work in manga and anime, then this is an extra special offering as the restoration of the original anime is brilliant, the sound is excellent and even the dubs are of quality. This is early work historically speaking in relation to anime and pre and post Akira and the restoration really makes this a special occasion.

Back and Better Than Ever

by -

If you're unfamiliar with Memories it's a series of three short films by what now are anime legends. The first short, Magnetic Rose, was written by Satoshi Kon before his directorial debut. The second short, Stink Bomb, is from the director of Wolf's Rain. The third short is an impressive one shot short film called Cannon Fodder written and directed by Otomo. All are quite entertaining.

However, the show was stolen by Discotek media, the company that remastered this film. The restoration is nothing short of breathtaking and they even went out of their way to record and write a new English dub for the movie. Beyond that the extras are quite robust. There is a making of the dub, a restoration commentary and you can even watch the whole original movie, un-restored, if you choose to. Diskotek went above and beyond what is expected and delivered an extraordinary re-release. There's never been a better time to check out Memories.

Magnetic Rose is a masterpiece - don't skip this!

by -

I ordered this based on the prestige of the first "episode", Magnetic Rose. Written by Satoshi Kon with a score by Yoko Kanno? YES, sign me up! Gorgeous hand drawn animation, haunting art design, and a horrifying mystery brewing in the heart of a forgotten spaceship. This is a recipe for success, which is fully realized in only ~45 minutes.
The other shorts here, Stink Bomb (a black comedy depicting the outbreak of an unusual bioweapon) and Cannon Fodder (a bleak look into a dystopian world obsessed with war) are standouts as well in their own rights, but pale in comparison to the opening act. I couldn't help but think re-ordering the shorts to put Magnetic Rose as the finale would have been more fitting. I suppose we have the power to do that on our own now.
Discotek has done a fabulous job remastering the original source material, even providing an excellent new dub for all three shorts. With a slew of new bonuses added for good measure, this is a steal for the low cost of entry.
