The people of Iorph live far away from the lands of men, weaving the happenings of each day into a fabric called Hibiol. They live for centuries while maintaining their youthful appearance. Maquia, an orphaned Iorph girl, lives in an oasis surrounded by friends, yet somehow feels alone. But the tranquil lives of the Iorph are shattered in an instant when the Mezarte army invades their territory on a dragon fleet, seeking the blood that grants the Iorph long life. Maquia manages to escape, but loses her friends and her home in the chaos. She then encounters an orphaned baby who is also alone. Maquia raises this boy, Ariel, with the help of some new friends. But as the era changes, the bond between Maquia and Ariel changes too, amidst a backdrop of racial tensions between the Iorph and the Mezarte. An Absolute Masterpiece

A decades-spanning story about love and loss, Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms is a must watch. I saw this film in theatres when it first premiered in the US, and the ending brought me to tears. With an equally moving soundtrack, Maquia deserves a spot on the shelf of any anime fan who likes emotional storytelling.
If you can afford it, the limited edition is a must-have for this amazing film.

The definitive release of this modern almost-classic Anime.

by -

Screenwriter Mari Okada makes her directing debut with this gorgeous, emotionally complex tale about a still-youthful looking girl (from a clan of other such females) who finds herself caring for a baby from the "human world". Meanwhile, her best friend Leilia is captured by a corrupt empire and forced to bear a child, only to be forbidden from seeing said kid. Although a bit overlong and guilty of leaving some plot strands unresolved, MAQUIA is still a winner. The animation and music are beautiful, but it's the relatable and realistic relationship between Maquia and her adopted son, Ariel, that is the real heart and soul of the film. Be prepared to shed tears if you decide to sit through this, but that is no complaint. The dubbing is excellent as well. Nozomi's Limited Edition is also superior to the Shout Factory release -- offering superior video quality and thankfully not hard-subbed subtitles.

Neo review.

One of the best animated films of 2018. I loved the story and art of young girl coming of age while raising a child that wasn't her own. Learning what it meant to be a mother, what true love was, and what it meant to let go. Maquia took me through a roller coaster of feelings as I sat through the showing. I'm glad to be able to own the film now and being able to show it to others.

An Overall Great Purchase

by -

The product itself is great! It comes in a nice case and comes with a neat artbook with some information about the timeline of the release and just artwork in general of the film. It also comes with a really neat script of "A Special Story" and is just overall an enjoyable read. The case for the discs is pretty and encapsulates the essence of the movie.

~~Now the movie itself~~
I'm obviously not the first to review this, so from the other reviews you can tell that people love this movie. Like every movie, it has it's flaws, but if you can look at the story, the music, the scenery, the emotion, and the thought that went behind this, that's why I would rate this movie 10/10. Not because it's perfect, but because of how it made me feel, and how invested I was in this story despite of it's flaws.

watch this, seriously, do it!

first off i will say i love these "hit you in the feels" anime. and this story does not disappoint. the trailer does not do this justice whatsoever. the music and timing is so well done, it keeps your attention the whole time it plays. be it soothing swaying music during the easygoing time, to violin fast pace battle music, its all there. plot: there are a few plot points that really needed to be settled better, but (without spoilers) some side character plot endings feel thrown together. but the main story characters all have fantastic backstories, and plot developments. the ending, oh man the ending, right in the feels... buy this.

Best Anime Movie 2018

by -

Amazing movie. Prepare to cry and have your heart broken. This should of won CrunchyRoll's best movie for 2018. The movie needs more love and support. This box set's quality is a lot higher compared to your average limited addition box sets. You won't be disappointed.

A great set to add to any movie collection.

by -

The Maquia limited edition Blu-Ray set is everything a fan of the film by Mari Okada would want. It comes with a small art book, a screenplay for a short which adds to the already existing world building, a gorgeous case for all the products given as well as an additional CD. The artwork on the cover is amazing and it is a well worth item to have in ones collection.
The movie itself is incredible, rich and emotional. Definitely a mother's day movie recommendation.

Get this film in any format. Worth owning.

Great film well worth having. The limited edition is nice to have and well worth it if on sale, but if your on the fence at least get the standard blu ray.

Although not in my top 5 I will say it is a wonderful story that gets better as the film progresses and has a strong finish. The art style is unique and makes the film visually captivating as well.

The booklet is mainly interviews from the cast and staff of Maquia and features some of the art backgrounds and character designs!

The Bonus disk includes the storyboards played in tandem with the completed movie, THE WHOLE THING! There's also some behind the scenes at the studio itself on the movie's production.

Would have loved if they had included the OST but it is still an awesome set without it!

Small gripes were that in some spots the english dub was really soft so I would have to turn it up, but then the loud moments were too loud so I ended up switching to japanese with subtitles about 10 minutes in. The subtitles are more like dubtitles. Both the Japanese dub and English dub are great though; the casting was very fitting!

Also, the disks are in a digipack. (Personally, I dislike digipacks because they feel cheap and are easy to damage)

STILL, extra bucks for the LE is TOTALLY WORTH IT!

A Beautiful Masterpiece

Rather than write a full review at this time, I will instead say, that I am extremely glad I decided to pick this up when it was on sale. I had not heard of it before. The cover art and the description really intrigued me. After watching it, I am surprised I hadn't heard more about this before. This was a true masterpiece and a completely unexpected gem. I found myself tearing up not only watching the film, but just thinking about it afterwards.
