The people of Iorph live far away from the lands of men, weaving the happenings of each day into a fabric called Hibiol. They live for centuries while maintaining their youthful appearance. Maquia, an orphaned Iorph girl, lives in an oasis surrounded by friends, yet somehow feels alone. But the tranquil lives of the Iorph are shattered in an instant when the Mezarte army invades their territory on a dragon fleet, seeking the blood that grants the Iorph long life. Maquia manages to escape, but loses her friends and her home in the chaos. She then encounters an orphaned baby who is also alone. Maquia raises this boy, Ariel, with the help of some new friends. But as the era changes, the bond between Maquia and Ariel changes too, amidst a backdrop of racial tensions between the Iorph and the Mezarte. This is a story of irreplaceable time, woven by two lonely people who can only find solace in each other.

An Absolute Masterpiece
A decades-spanning story about love and loss, Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms is a must watch. I saw this film in theatres when it first premiered in the US, and the ending brought me to tears. With an equally moving soundtrack, Maquia deserves a spot on the shelf of any anime fan who likes emotional storytelling.
If you can afford it, the limited edition is a must-have for this amazing film.
The definitive release of this modern almost-classic Anime.

Screenwriter Mari Okada makes her directing debut with this gorgeous, emotionally complex tale about a still-youthful looking girl (from a clan of other such females) who finds herself caring for a baby from the "human world". Meanwhile, her best friend Leilia is captured by a corrupt empire and forced to bear a child, only to be forbidden from seeing said kid. Although a bit overlong and guilty of leaving some plot strands unresolved, MAQUIA is still a winner. The animation and music are beautiful, but it's the relatable and realistic relationship between Maquia and her adopted son, Ariel, that is the real heart and soul of the film. Be prepared to shed tears if you decide to sit through this, but that is no complaint. The dubbing is excellent as well. Nozomi's Limited Edition is also superior to the Shout Factory release -- offering superior video quality and thankfully not hard-subbed subtitles.

One of the best animated films of 2018. I loved the story and art of young girl coming of age while raising a child that wasn't her own. Learning what it meant to be a mother, what true love was, and what it meant to let go. Maquia took me through a roller coaster of feelings as I sat through the showing. I'm glad to be able to own the film now and being able to show it to others.
