About Lupin the 3rd Vs Detective Conan TV Special DVD

The world's greatest thief and the world's best detective finally meet in the Lupin the 3rd Vs Detective Conan TV Special!

Beloved criminal Lupin III has his sights set on a new score: the crown of the Vespanian royal family! His timing, however, couldn't be worse. The sudden death of the queen and prince of Vespania has thrown the country into disarray, and while that won't hurt the gentleman burglar's efforts, it comes with a small problem... and that problem's name is Conan Edogawa!

Throw in a royal case of mistaken identity, along with a shadowy plot born from greed, and it's a stage appropriately set for a clash between the world's greatest thief and the world's greatest detective!

A Cross-Over Jewel

by -

Two classic anime series come together for the first outside of fan-fiction, and the result is sheer unadulterated fun. Both protagonists get (most of) their supporting casts, knitting the two series closer together, and every character gets his/her moment to shine. I'm only left with this question: why didn't somebody think of doing this sooner? If you're not familiar with Detective Conan or Lupin, definitely watch a little of each before diving in, but I think most anime fans are already acquainted. Whether you're hard-core or casual fan of either series, you're in for a treat!
This is the TV Special; watch this before you watch the Movie (can't wait to watch it, too). Enjoy!

Not bad... Improbable in some ways but a decent ride!

I saw this special a while back, probably before it was licensed by Discotek. As unlikely as the pairing may seem, the Lupin-Conan duo works. And you'd hardly notice it's "TV animation" since it really does look like a movie with the decent action I've come to expect from a Lupin special.
As usual, it looks to the police that Lupin is up to his usual shenanigans but all is not as it seems and Conan gets involved with the Lupin crew in the middle of this mystery. There is a minor improbable plot point at the end of the film where Lupin knows all about Conan but in-between it's actually a fairly decent ride.
Neither character is disserved by this movie and it definitely has something for Lupin and Conan fans alike.

A strange concept that somehow works

Crossovers can go either way, but this one as strange as it sounds, works for the most part. While the movie felt more like a Lupin movie, this one felt more like a Conan movie, with Lupin taking a back seat in this one. And not much in the way of a “vs” scenario. Out of both of them, I would say I enjoyed this one more. I liked that this one was more simple and didn’t need to have multiple characters and plot points like the other did. And it wasn’t as cinematic as the movie was, which has it’s highs and lows. Since this was more on the Conan side, I wish there was more of a mystery has to who the killer was. And like I said before, there’s not much Lupin action so I would recommend this and the movie to get the full experience. Just make sure to watch them in the right order.
