Great Special, fun action

by -

Some of my favorite character interactions on the Lupin TV specials are in this one. If your a fan of the Inspector then this movie is a treat. The comedy gags got me to chuckle a few times and there are some funny action sequences. This was probably in my top favorite specials thus far released by Discotek. The plot isn't anything special but the character interaction is were it shines.
The funimation dub isn't great, but it's there for those who don't like subs. Super cute, super fun, and typical a Lupin adventure. Would recommend.

An Okay Special For Lupin, But A Great Special for Zenigata

by -

The made-for-TV Lupin the Third movies from the 90's aren't exactly the highlights of the franchise, but this one is perfect for fans with a soft-spot for Lupin’s long-suffering nemesis Inspector Zenigata. Ol’ Pops is more of a hero this time out rather than just a foil for Lupin and his antics. A key thread is his relationship with Maria, a young reporter with psychic abilities who insists on shadowing him. Their dynamic is adorable, and she’s one of the more memorable one-off characters in the series. Pops also gets most of the big hero moments, overshadowing even Lupin himself.

The action is great, but the plot jumps around a lot and is hard to follow. I constantly felt like I’d missed something, and was left with questions, like how and why did Fujiko end up running a newspaper? The animation style is more reminiscent of classic 70's Lupin compared to other 90’s specials. The dub is solid, with standout performances for Lupin, Jigen, and Maria.

A basic Lupin tale that I wanted more from (3.5/5)

by -

This is pretty much your basic Lupin adventure. Treasure to be had, police chases with Zenigata, and a new heroine with a strange past dealing with the antagonist. It’s good, but nothing too terribly new. The story is easy to follow and it doesn’t drag on too long like some previous specials have. And really, it more focuses on Zenigata this time around. You get classic Lupin hijinks and an okay antagonist that isn’t linked to the nazis this time. Buuuut, I kinda wanted more of a grander story with higher stakes. There’s not much explanation on the treasure or the antagonist and the laboratory. It just gives you the basics and doesn’t go too deep into them. It does have it’s interesting moments with the new heroine and comedic ones too, but that’s about it. I want to give this a 4 but it just misses the mark for me. Still better than Twilight Gemini though.

Top Tier Lupin III special

by -

Tokyo Crisis is top tier Lupin III. I don't want to spoil anything, but this one is non-stop fun and action with some great character moments for Zenigata. one of the best specials and probably a decent entry point into the franchise. Though, you may enjoy Zenigata's story more if you are already familiar with him.
