About Lu Over the Wall Blu-ray/DVD

Lu Over the Wall is from the visionary mind of Masaaki Yuasa and is a joyous twist on the classic fairy tale about a little mermaid who comes ashore to join a middle-school rock band and propel them to fame.

After his family moves from Tokyo to a small fishing village, teenager Kai spends his days sulking and adrift. When his classmates invite him to play keyboard in their band, their jam sessions bring an unexpected guest: Lu, a young mermaid whose fins turn to feet when she hears the beats, and whose singing causes humans to compulsively dance. But when an ancient prophecy threatens Lu and the village, Kai and his new friends must save the day in this toe-tapping adventure for the entire family.

Good not great.

Lu Over the Wall was an overall great movie, but the ending leaves something to be desired. The pacing is good and the fun and drama mix well. If you are looking for a new movie to add to your collection this one is definitely worth it even if you get left with a few unanswered questions.

A Ponyo-esque hidden gem

by

I haven’t heard of this one till recent and I’m glad I picked this one up. This was a very enjoyable and entertaining movie. The biggest thing that this movie can be compared to is Ponyo or just Studio Ghibli movies in general with a bit of Mamoru Hosoda. The art style and animation are very pleasing to the eyes and the music just knocked it out of the park. The story can be a little all over, but I’d be lying if I said this movie didn’t make me feel, especially during the musical moments. And when I thought there wasn’t much else to feel, it brings it back up. I will say though the main character and a couple others had a bit of strange character development. There were some unanswered questions and it kinda ended abruptly with not much aftermath, but even with those, I still really enjoyed this movie. And GKIDS did a great job with the dub. Highly recommended.

Not Ponyo, better!!

by

Comparisons to Ponyo is over exaggerated, Mermaid is the only thing to compare, I dunno why people compare in the first place. The Shark dad is a bit like Totoro, but who's comparing right ;) The art style is like watching moving water color paintings, its beautiful and exaggerated, I love it. All the characters are imperfect, which is what you should expect from both Teens and Adults. Mistakes from the past and the present are pretty much what this film is about. The music is fun and quirky, I like the attempt to dub the songs in English, they did a nice job. Although the film ends on a high note, don't expect your Hollywood endings. Solid movie for all ages, please give this movie a try, its great! Another quality release from GKid's (I've not been disappointed in a GKIDS release).
