Uramichi is a 31-year old children’s TV host who leads physical exercises and teaches life lessons colored by one main theme: adulthood sucks. Alongside mascots played by a couple of bushy-tailed millennials, and a singing duo whose music embodies the notion of being kicked while you’re down, Uramichi wades through the misery of working life, one sardonic comment at a time…

A great dark comedy

by -

Uramichi Oniisan tells the story of Uramichi, a 31-year-old kids’ television host, and his struggles with adult life.

I’m a huge fan of slice-of-life stories (mixed with a bit of dark comedy in this particular case), so when I read the synopsis for this I immediately had to start it.

I enjoyed the first volume a lot! Uramichi’s sardonic remarks are very on point at times and I can see a lot of myself in him. I too work with kids so I know how it feels to put on a facade of cheerfulness for hours when you are actually feeling dead inside (the story hints us that Uramichi is suffering from burnout and high-functioning depression, so you can imagine how it is).

I do hope our MC gets a happy ending at then end though (and some therapy too), but for the time being it feels good to read about the struggles of being an adult, it makes me feel less alone.

Depressing but like in a relatable way

I think that there is a lot that this manga does well. For one, comedy. It is extremely dark, there's no doubt about it, but it still will get a chuckle out of you every once in a while. But where this probably shines most, is just the stark realization that there is a bit of Uramichi in all of us. That grim feeling that this is all there is to life is just potent in every page. It's strangely terrifying, and contrasting it all with the bright life of a children's TV show just makes it that much more obvious of the position Uramichi is in. Feels bad but in a good way. I highly recommend this.

I found this manga hilarious and relatable. The characters were great and the setting (a children's television show) was a perfect backdrop for the story. I read the first and second volumes in one day, and am eagerly awaiting the release of the third. Highly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys dry, self-deprecating humor.

I got recommended this book and it is now my new favorite series. Uramichi couldn’t be more relatable and I live for his slightly dark and blunt point of views. There is not one character throughout the story that I am disappointed in. Each one brings something to the table and many times I died laughing. Don’t think and just pick it up, because more likely than not you will not regret it.

Hilariously Accurate

by -

Uramichi Oniisan is a sarcastically comical look into adulthood and it’s frequent irritating challenges. It’s a super enjoyable read with fun art and relatable adult characters that you definitely wish you couldn’t relate to. It’s not heavily story driven but is still a great time if you aren’t looking for something heavy.

Funny and Relatable

10 out of 10 would recommend to a friend... or anyone else who asks for a manga recommendation. This slice of life comedy really brought on the "life isn't a tragedy, but a comedy". In Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan the story follows Uramichi who is on the cast of a popular children's television show. The story really highlights the struggles of being an adult in both personal and work life while still portraying the hilarity that just happens in life (especially a children's show production). The storytelling and characters balance out perfectly that the humor doesn't come off in an unappealing way. If you like slice of life and dark humor I would definitely recommend this book... or if you are even thinking about getting this book I would say that's a good enough reason to get this book as well!
