Kowloon Generic Romance Manga Volume 1

Like the artist’s previous work, after the rain, this volume has incredible atmosphere. It’s easy to get drawn in deep to the characters and quirky setting with perfect pacing and a hint of mystery within the mundane. There is a lot to speculate about the characters’ feelings though vivid expressions, even without words. The book is made very well, one thing of note, I’m happy to see the sound effects are only translated and not also romanized like yen press usually does. That has always been irksome to me because it muddles the panels with distracting words and these panels are full enough with detailed renderings of a Hong Kong cityscape.

In a word: perfection. This was another one of my most anticipated releases of this year! I loved everything about this first volume. Especially that ending. I’m gonna need that next one ASAP! This will be a series I will be reading as soon as I get a new volume.

I highly recommend this mangaka's other series also: After the Rain. Her story telling and art is brilliant!

First off if your a fan of the "After the Rain" manga/anime, I highly suggest this manga. The story is relatable and charming at the same time. All the characters in the story are highly loveable, the two main characters are unmistakably adorable, the art work is VERY well done with tons of details in the background. When I completed this first volume I was highly surprised by the twist and 100% be buying every volume that comes out.

I selected “Kowloon Generic Romance” as my English pub manga of the year 2022. This series is that good.
Mayuzuki Jun’s (author of “After the Rain”) distinct art style works wonders. The world and characters are delicately crafted bringing out the ‘nostalgic’ nature of Kowloon. The author has a way of making simple, everyday activities like home renovation, smoking cigarettes, or eating watermelon look incredibly sexy, but not in a lewd way (except for maybe the paining scene).
I think what set this series apart from the rest of the love stories I’ve read was the mystery element, which doesn’t really surface until near the very end of volume 1. But when that hook sank its teeth in, I nearly fell out of my chair. “Kowloon Generic Romance” is set in the future, adding sci-fi into the mix, but from the first volume we still don’t know how much that’s going to play a part of the story. That being said, I’m very eager to find out.
