Robert Kirkman at his best

by

From the creator of The Walking Dead, Invincible is a fun series. It has fun with various superhero tropes, while telling a good character-centric story. The narrative is always going in fun and interesting directions, usually killing off people by the millions in the process, and there is never a dull moment. The characters are grounded, despite their being alien or super-powered, and make mistakes. Robert Kirkman does a great job of balancing multiple plot lines while keeping the story straightforward. He also writes great interpersonal drama without compromising characterization. The art, largely by Ryan Ottley, is also great; it can be cartoony but also dynamic when it needs to be (with gory splash pages). If you've seen/enjoyed the show you will definitely enjoy this; if you haven't seen the show, but like comics/manga definitely give this (or at least The Walking Dead) a read.
