The start of an arc that takes some investment

by

This volume of Hunter x Hunter marks the beginning of the Dark Continent Voyage / Succession Battle / Whatever its Really Confusing arc of the series, the first one not to be covered yet by the 2011 anime series and still the current running arc due to Togashi's long hiatuses. Despite its gripping and honestly insane premise of journeying to the undiscovered super-continent so big that the entire known world is literally islands in a lake on it, the arc gets off to a start that pretty definitively shows it isn't for everyone, with heavy and grounded speculative fiction handling of the complex geopolitics around this voyage, and double- and triple- cross-plotting between the main characters involved in it, with a web off allegiances that rivals Game of Thrones, (made possible by at times walls of text in the middle of a comic) being the name of the game in this volume. It seems like a lot to invest in, especially for an arc that may or may not ever even end.

new characters

by -

This volume brings on so many new characters, as the start of a new story arc begins (that could take a long time to conclude) it seems to have more room for story growth than even the chimera ants! Sitting down and reading through the whole volume was a wonderful surprise when it arrived, and I can hardly wait to read further.
