IT'S ABOUT TIME
After waiting all this time, Funimation has finally released this set. It wont be too long after this that they start to release HU Volumes 5-8.
I JUST WISH I COULD WAIT THAT LONG.
REAL vampires only here!
If you are sick and tired of all the pretty-boy, whiny, pansy-assed, morally conflicted, emo-vampires that seem to have taken over the entertainment world (yes, I am referring to 'twilight, vamp diaries, vamp knight', etc) then look no further than Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. I have been loving anime for the last 10+ years and Hellsing in all its forms still remains in my top 5 all time favorites. Alucard is a REAL vampire- utterly psychotic, evil, over-the-top violent, and even kinda sexy in a demented serial-killer way. Alucard doesn't waste time whining about how guilty he feels about killing and drinking blood- because he doesn't- he just whips out his insanely huge guns and blows away monster ghouls, grinning like a fiend all the while! Alucard could wipe the floor with any of the wimpy, whiny vampire characters that are popular these days. Of course, they would be a total waste of his time, he'd probably strike them dead with his maniacal laughter alone.
I do like some (but not all!) of the conflicted-type vampire characters, but lately it just seems like they're EVERYWHERE, and I'm getting tired of them. If I have to hear about yet another Twilight movie or a stupid teen-masquarading vampire in luuuve with a ditzy teenage girl I am going to stake myself- gag!!
I actually did enjoy Vampire Knight, but Hellsing is on a completely different order of magnitude (and greatness). Another great vampire character is Vampire Hunter D (the 2 movie dvds are out of print but still available) who is somewhat conflicted about his identity but is a fascinating, also kick-ass character. My first anime ever was the original Vampire Hunter D movie and I still love it. I only hope someday Vampire Hunter D and the sequel VHD Bloodlust will eventually get a decent upscale and release on Bluray. Guess I shouldn't hold my breath, right?
If you get any Hellsing anime, be aware that there is lots of blood and gory scenes, in case you're not prepared for that. But if you want to see vampires acting like proper vampires (i.e. the MONSTERS they are) then check out the original Hellsing series and/or Hellsing Ultimate. The Hellsing mangas are awesome too. You won't be disappointed!
Although the original Hellsing was a most excellent series, this version is fantastic too--from the amazing artwork and animation to the fact that it's finally available on Blu-ray after a rather long wait! If you watch with Japanese audio, then you'll be happy to know the voice actors from the 2001 series have reprised their original roles in Hellsing Ultimate. This set comes with both DVD and Blu-ray in a single Blu-ray sized case with a slipcover. This is one title everyone should see!
Watch the Originals first. You can't beat a classic.
by Otaku John
Ok, lemme start by saying I'm a great fan of the original Hellsing series. Yes, they've brought back the original voice actors. Too bad they didn't bring back the original quality of animation. Compared to the original series, the Ultimate edition looks like it was drawn by a bunch of teenage fans instead of professional animators. Rehashing the same old material gets old too. They should've just left well enough alone, and pick up where the old series left off instead of trying to redo it for the umpteenth time. And get some good animators for Otaku's sake!
Bad review Below
Dont pay attention the ignorance of bad reviews saying that they should have just continued with the old series. This series is Loyal to the original work in story and art, The animation was beautifully done.
While the original Hellsing anime earned many fans, it veered off into left field at the end, leaving an unsatisfying conclusion. This one scraps its predecessor entirely to start over from the beginning and get it right (you know, like FMA: Brotherhood). And, having read the manga, I have to say it largely succeeds.
The result is a true spectacle, a treat for the eyes and ears of the action and horror aficionados the title always catered to. With one exception, nobody in the series harbors even the slightest self doubt, and the result is a clash of egos where every single one is fed by fact and hardly inflated at all.
The blu-rays look and sound gorgeous, and while the extras are mostly interviews and panels with the English cast, they're plentiful and entertaining in their own right. In this title, I got everything I wanted.
