Vampires Done Right

by

This show is good on many levels. The story is interesting and the music is some of the best in any anime. The English dub is also very good (personally, I don't think there's any better choice for the guy they picked for Alucard). The main selling point though, is how well the concept of vampire is carried out. This isn't some cheesy vampire romance and at no point do you feel that vampires are somehow being humanized. It's clear from the get-go that the main character is evil, which makes the show so much more appealing to someone who is a fan of the classical vampire genre. Highly recommended!

Vampires are Cool again

by

Hellsing is a decent anime dealing with an organization that kills vampires and their primary operative Alucard who is a vampire himself. The shows strongest point is Alucard himself as he is badass, cool and brutal. The animation is decent and so are the rest of the characters. What caused the low rating is the story while the first half of the anime follows the manga and is pretty good the second half is an anime only story. This might not have been bad if the story was good but the second half leaves you with questions that do not get answered.
Its not a bad show just a bit of a disappointment luckily there is Hellsing Ultimate which I heard was better done. Hellsing is an ok show if you want tough vampires and a cool main character otherwise you might want to pass.

One of the greats!

by

The original Hellsing may not be as visually spectacular as the Ultimate OVA's proved to be, but it is still a fantastic show and I would highly recommend watching it! Arucard is a dark and haunted character--there are no blond haired western heroes to be had here, which is a nice switch. The action sometimes feels a bit anticlimactic since Arucard tends to be so much more powerful than everybody he comes in contact with, but the animation is really unique and very different from much of what I've seen in other similar shows. If you haven't seen anything from the Hellsing universe, you should start here and then check out the OVA's. Also give the manga a chance--the artwork is great! DVD presentation is okay, but you shouldn't expect the crisp detail that you will see in the OVA's. A worthy purchase for any fan of anime or vampire lore!

a real vampire

by

best depiction of a vampire.... ever. Untold Dracula wasn't bad, but he was too nice to be a bloodthirsty monster. I have watched this show SO many times and its still good. you will be hard pressed to find a better musical score in any other anime. the dub for this one is absolutely outstanding! alucard is the craziest vampire out there. if you love anime like I do, BUY THIS B4 ITS OUT OF PRINT!

best vampire anime ever!

by

Hellsing is the best vamp anime ever... One of the few anime series that was so good, that after watching it, I had to go out and buy the mangas. Been watching it since it first came out years ago, and it never gets old. Great action, storyline, intrigue, drama, and even a frustrating star-crossed love story to boot. You know that an anime has to be great, if rightstufanime has its lead character Alucard answering its customer service phone...

My favorite version of this awesome vampire tale

by

This might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but this version of Hellsing (TV) is easily my favorite version of this story, way above both the manga and the later "Hellsing Ultimate" OVA. It's more character-focused than action-focused and really gets into what makes Seras, Integra, and Alucard tick. I also always felt like the manga jumped the shark a bit once the "boys from Brazil" arrived, and I prefer this anime's divergent storyline.

Aside from those controversial opinions about version preferences, this show is great as a stand-alone. The story is great and tightly-paced, and the soundtrack is unique and amazing, one of the best you'll find in any anime anywhere. The visuals are occasionally dated by their early-2000s CG effects, but hold up pretty well for the most part, and the character designs and art style are great. Whether you love horror anime in general or just want to experience one of the very best the early 2000s had to offer, this set is one you just cannot miss.

Terrible adaptation

by

Bafflingly this 13 episode adaptation only covers the very first story arc of Hellsing, which is only the baseline set up for the characters and conflict - as a result, it ends just as all the questions are put on the table and without any of them being answered, making it supremely unsatisfying. I don't mind anime that stop half way in the story point of the source material if they must, but this was just not the place to do it; and although the anime itself is competently made, it doesn't stand out enough in technical prowess to make up for it. Either read the source manga or watch the vastly superior OVA set.
