Hybrid Crime Drama and Boys Love

by -

I bought this for the premise, but I enjoy yaoi. Hanger #1 is a hybrid manga that is a futuristic crime drama with elements of boys' love. That's both good and odd. It's hard to find yaoi with story substance (like Blue Morning) outside of romantic comedies (like The World's Greatest First Love). Here is a real story with developing characters (through heavy dialogue and exposition - sometimes the panels should just speak for themselves). And that makes the sillier aspects of yaoi comedy stick out awkwardly. But, while the two main characters may look like a typical yaoi couple, they aren't. They break the usual stereotypes. There is some moping, of course, but it's refreshing to see characters that are both strong and weak at the same time, in different ways. I hope the scripting decreases as the story moves forward. Torn between 4 & 5 stars because there isn't much BL in this volume. It's heavy on world and character building, which is expected in the first book of a series.

a solid read for fans of action and BL alike!

While the novel takes a few pages to set a consistent tone, once it finds its footing its a wonderful ride!
One thing to not is that while this is a BL novel, the bulk or the plot focuses mainly on introducing the main characters and their backstories, with only two main 'juicy' occurrences. This series is much more story-driven than some other BL novels i've read, but I find it quite refreshing! The dynamic feels much different than most BL or buddy cop novels, with all characters having solid motivations for what they seek out to do, nobody is without a purpose. While the formatting can be a bit confusing sometimes, I would gladly recommend this to a friend.
