Hybrid Crime Drama and Boys Love
by Kastie -
I bought this for the premise, but I enjoy yaoi. Hanger #1 is a hybrid manga that is a futuristic crime drama with elements of boys' love. That's both good and odd. It's hard to find yaoi with story substance (like Blue Morning) outside of romantic comedies (like The World's Greatest First Love). Here is a real story with developing characters (through heavy dialogue and exposition - sometimes the panels should just speak for themselves). And that makes the sillier aspects of yaoi comedy stick out awkwardly. But, while the two main characters may look like a typical yaoi couple, they aren't. They break the usual stereotypes. There is some moping, of course, but it's refreshing to see characters that are both strong and weak at the same time, in different ways. I hope the scripting decreases as the story moves forward. Torn between 4 & 5 stars because there isn't much BL in this volume. It's heavy on world and character building, which is expected in the first book of a series.
