An Outstanding Conclusion to a Brilliant Adaptation

by -

The second half of this manga adaptation definitely lived up to finishing what the first half started. The artwork was spot-on, both for the dead city of the "Elder Things" and for all of Lovecraft's alien monsters that had appeared during the story's lengthy flashback. I only wish that all of the illustrations for the flashback were on color so that the full details of them could've been made out.

The stories of H.P. Lovecraft have always been hard to adapt, but this manga adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness did an outstanding job of it. In short, this is how I would expect a film version of this iconic novella of Lovecraft's to be performed.

Really enjoyed this and the first volume. The Hound & Other Stories is also great, especially “The Nameless City”. I’ve been a Lovecraft fan for 25 years and I almost always come away from visual adaptations feeling like the essence has been lost. Not with these. Tanabe captures it. I really really hope that more of his HPL work comes to the West.

Great ending to my favorite horror series of 2019. I will be getting everything that comes out by Gou Tanabe in English.

The horror continues

by -

Now, here is the stakes are raised. Continuing where it left off in the first volume, we get to explore the mysterious city of the Ancient Ones and the horrors the lie within.
As always, Tanabe's work is exquisite as well as his adaptation. Tanabe expands and contracts on what Lovecraft built, which makes this second volume a thrilling ride from beginning to end.
At the Mountains of Madness adapted by Tanabe is the definitive version of Lovecraft's classic tale of cosmic horror.
As with the first volume, the presentation is almost flawless. I wished this was released in a larger format for easier reading.

Slow build up, great artwork.

by -

I have never read any of H.P. Lovecraft's work but have been looking for any horror manga I can grab my hands on. The buildup between both volumes is very flow, to only start to see progress until halfway through Vol 2. The artwork and story is very incredbile, however the ending was very anti-climatic for me given the very drawn out build up.
