About H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness Manga Volume 1

H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness Manga Volume 1 features story and art by Gou Tanabe.

January 25, 1931: an expedition team arrives at a campsite in Antarctica . . . to find its crew of men and sled dogs strewn and dead. But a still more horrific sight is the star-shaped mound of snow nearby... for under its five points is a grave--and what lies beneath is not human!

At the Mountains of Madness is a journey into the core of Lovecraft’s mythos—the deep caverns and even deeper time of the inhospitable continent where the secret history of our planet is preserved—amidst the ruins of its first civilization, built by the alien Elder Things with the help of their bioengineered monstrosities, the shoggoths. Since it was first published in Astounding Stories during the classic pulp era, At the Mountains of Madness has influenced both horror and science fiction worldwide!

Explore the beginning of the madness

by -

Gou Tanabe has been adapting H.P. Lovecraft's short stories for a while now, and now we have them in English, with "At the Mountains of Madness" being the most ambitious at two volumes.
This first volume deals with the initial team that went before the story's narrator in Lovecraft's novella.
The art more realistic than the usual manga-style and it's also dark and moody with deep blacks and gory details, nothing like Berserk.
This is a quality manga release, the pages are nice and thick preventing, but not as good as Viz media's and Vertical hardcover releases of FMA and Gundam: The Origin.
I have a few complaints, one, is the size of the book, I wished it would've been released in a larger format instead of the standard manga size. The second is the type-font used for the dialogue and narration. It could've been a little more elegant.
Other than that, the book is as close to perfect as a manga can get. You won't regret adding it to your collection.

A Masterful Adaptation of a Classic Horror Story

by -

As someone who's read many of H.P. Lovecraft's stories multiple times, I couldn't help but give this manga adaptations of one of his most iconic stories a look.

To be honest I've always found the original version of At the Mountains of Madness to be a little hard to get through, at least with the first few chapters. Part of the reason for that is probably the simple fact that Lovecraft never really did that great a job with his characters, but in this manga version the characters really came to life.

Of course the greatest aspect of this book is Gou Tanabe's artwork. He did a spectacular job with the dark landscapes and with the more gory scenes of the story. My only complaint is that I wish that the book was in color so that more details could be made out in certain parts.

Overall, I was thrilled with this first half of this classic horror story's manga adaptation, and I can hardly wait for the second one to come out.
