About Mobile Suit Gundam Awakening Escalation Confrontation (2nd Ed)

Mobile Suit Gundam: Awakening, Escalation, Confrontation 2nd Edition was written by Yoshiyuki Tomino.

Called "a cornerstone of anime SF," Japan's Gundam franchise begun in 1979 now boasts a worldwide cult of devotees. In the Gundam universe, the Earth Federation battle rebellious off-world colonies, and "Newtype" warriors with evolved mentality pilot gargantuan suits of high-tech armor.

This novelization presents creator Yoshiyuki Tomino's unvarnished vision for his own core series, with richer characterizations and a shocking ending. Controversial when it first appeared in English in 1990, the trilogy is being brought to fans in a single, re-edited volume, with a new introduction by Gundam expert Mark Simmons.

An unprecedented and unrestrained version of Tomino's Vision of Mobile Suit Gundam

This book delivers in every physical way possible. I was hooked the moment I read through the first chapter.
Without the issues and restraints of the television format. This is THE definitive view into what Tomino's original vision was for the show.

Characters are more fleshed out,and every bit of exposition seems to be delivered in a different way as if delivered by the current character via their thoughts. And every detail comes to life in words painted beautifully by the Author/translator as if you could imagine every moment in your mind.

There was one minor issue with my copy in that at one point ( I think page 317/318?) where the pages were printed in the opposite order. Once I figued out which was which. It was not a problem.

If you are a fan of good storytelling in general, science fiction, you MUST read this book. If you are a Gundam fan, there is no reason NOT to read this.

A Must-Experience Piece of Gundam History!

by -

I've been a Gundam fan since 2000 when I first saw Gundam Wing, and ever since then, it has been my goal to discover all I needed to know about Gundam. Then I heard about the novel trilogy alternate retelling of Mobile Suit Gundam (the original Gundam T.V. series), and my curiosity about narrative differences between the versions had me buy this book.

I enjoyed the novel trilogy for not only its inclusion of characters and concepts not seen in the anime, but also its unlimited use of both technical terms and detail of in-story politics. It was like reading a script for a long-running weekly complex anime drama for grown-ups.

Although the novel trilogy retelling of what started the Gundam franchise is not canon, this is a piece of Gundam history that grown-ups who like science-fiction, whether they have seen the orginal Gundam anime or not, should never miss out on experiencing. Buy yourself a copy, and thanks for reading this review.

A different take on the Gundam story

by -

This is the story of Gundam 0079 closer to Yoshiyuki Tomino's original vision for the series, without having to worry about the constraints of network TV and having to sell toys.

The story is tightly paced, the characters are more mature, and there's some significant deviations from the version that was on TV or the compilation movies, Zeon only has 2 mobile suits, the OYW takes place entirely in space, and there's some character changes.

Overall it's a pretty solid story and a unique spin on Mobile Suit Gundam.

Do you like UC Gundam? If so, buy this book!

by -

Let’s start with the bad, slight changes but it does keep close to the original. Examples, they call the White Base, the Pegasus. Amuro is already a pilot before they obtain the GUndam. Also, there is some awkward translation choices, I guess some things just don’t translate well.

The good, IT’S GUNDAM. Cmon man, it’s the story of the one year war in narrative form. It’s the authors original intention with the Gundam story. You can be one of those jerks in the Conventions who berate Gundam Wing fans who know nothing about Gundam just by reading this book! Just kidding, Gundam Wing is fine (Sorta).

Mobile Suit Gundam Novels 1-3

by -

Mobile Suit Gundam Awakening, Escalation, Confrontation is three novels written by Tomino Yoshiyuki who was the original creator of the anime series. These books are less of a straight novelization of the show and more of a straight telling without the restrictions of a long running television show. There are a couple illustrations throughout the book for major characters and mechs, but this is a normal novel.
What I really like about the novel was Tomnio really got to delve into the world more in the book than the show. This is where the book shined for me but a friend of mine who I lent the book to could not get into it. So if you are interested in a larger plot, you will likely be disappointed. As for me, I finished the book in three days and will certainly go through it again.
