About Gunbuster The Movie Blu-ray

There are monsters between the stars, alien nightmares determined to destroy the human race. Noriko Takaya was only a child when her father sacrificed his life to temporarily stop the alien's advance. Now she's training to pilot a giant robot. She's not very good, however. Not until her coach suggests modeling herself after the schools best pilot, Kazumi Amano. Mastering the skills to reach the top transforms Noriko into both a rival and partner for Kazumi, who secretly loves their Coach, and a third fiery female joins the rivalry in the form of Soviet pilot Jung Freud. But their real adversary is time, as the faster-than-light travel required steals years on Earth for hours spent in flight. And that means that, even if they survive, the loved ones that Noriko, Kazumi, and Jung travel into space to defend may already have died before they return. Get ready for a major landmark in the history of animation as Studio Gainax, character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto (MACROSS), and director Hideaki Anno (EVANGELION) unleash the feature film version of GUNBUSTER!

A Great, Iconic Mecha Anime

by -

My first encounter with the Gunbuster franchise, this film's clearly an iconic and inspirational work even today. Specific scenes popped out at me that clearly had inspired shows like TTGL, Kill la Kill, Gargantia, and many more. The 1988 animation, music, and story are impressive and groundbreaking.

The story is a mature one, without much cheesecake (though some nudity), but with high drama, and innate tragedy from the lightspeed time-dilation subplot. The struggles and growth of Noriko are easy to identify and empathize with, from her early days as an over-emotional adolescent, to the fantastic emotional gut-punch of an ending.

My only complaint is that the story seems very abridged in this film. There were clearly many OVA episodes compressed into 90 minutes, so most characters are severely underdeveloped, including the secondary lead character. The story is fantastic, so I'll seek out the full OVAs. However, this film is fantastic and worthy of any anime shelf.

Gunbuster The Movie on Blu-Ray

This movie was recommend to me by an 'old-school' anime fan. I cannot express enough what a pleasant surprise this was. It actually exceeded my expectations which were already kind of high considering who recommended it to me. The art style is great and looks even better on the blu ray quality. There may have been some kind of upgrades done as it looks polished but it still retains that trueness to the hand drawn style of the earlier years of anime. I will be returning to watch this one again and again and I'm sure you will too. I would recommend this to all types of viewers as its just a great ova in general. What an inspiring Japanese movie!

Beautiful Transfer- wonderful film

Gunbuster is great- Maiden Japan did a wonderful job on this release. The only complaints I have are just that this isn't the 6 episode OVA which has yet to get an American release on blu-ray- the film blazes through what would be the first three episodes at a lightning pace.
