Takes the best of the American adventure shows and makes it even better.

by -

I have just started getting into the classic anime series, and on a whim, I decided to try this show out. It was excellent. It had the best of the American-type world adventure shows (complete with a suprisingly multicultural cast of characters) while not shying away from the darker elements the American shows tried to avoid. The characters are great, the animation is really good for the time, and the plot is constantly moving and keeps you engaged. The plot admittedly stumbles a little near the end, but it's nothing insurmountable, and the finale makes up for it.

All in all, highly recommended.

Fantastic 80s adventure

by -

I love 80s series and 80s mech series a lot to begin with. It was no surprise to me that I would love this, but it was a much different show than I expected, which isn't a bad thing.
This series is more of an adventure show than a mecha show (I don't believe the kid even pilots the robot, the robot is sentient on its own, oddly enough), but it's a really good adventure show that starts off strong and keeps the momentum going. It does drag a bit in the middle, but it quickly picks its pace back up with little problem. Since the plot and the characters are both interesting and addictive to watch and the animation is fantastic, it's a great series to watch for any adventure anime fan. The lack of giant robot usage may disappoint some who demand it, but go in with an open mind and you'll find a great series!

The greatest adventure

by

Giant Gorg is truly a hidden gem. Don't mistake it for just another Sunrise mecha show; it's a fantastic adventure with great characters and a truly unique robot that doesn't even show up for the first few episodes! Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's beautiful art style takes center stage, and if you dig his Gundam Origin work, then you need to check this out.

Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's Saturday Morning Cartoon Show For Big Kids

by -

I'm going to repeat what everyone else here has said. This is a fantastic show. The story is gripping, the action is intense and the bond between The Boy And His Giant Robot is touching. Animation is good throughout with no dips in quality. No extraneous filler or fanservice or super annoying characters. This is excellent entertainment and a rousing adventure story

Be aware though if you are watching this with kids or if you are of a sensitive disposition that this has some material that some may find objectionable - while it has a cool Saturday Morning Adventure vibe, gun violence is portrayed fairly realistically and there are a number of savage, non-sanitized beatings on multiple characters including children. There is also a small amount of nudity.

Discotek's DVD is a good presentation of the show. Picture is good and sound is decent. Clean opening and endings are provided.

Here's hoping for a future HD release!
