About Getting Along in Japanese DVD 8
Getting Along in Japanese: Preparing a Meal is the eighth lesson in a DVD video learning series which presents the Japanese language through familiar daily situations.
The setting is a traditional Japanese inn where the hosts teach their guests to communicate using practical and current expressions. Hosts Katsuya Kobayashi and Kaori Itakura introduce spoken Japanese through carefully dramatized skits designed to help beginning students learn to cope with everyday life in modern Japan.
In the key skit of Episode Eight a young woman visits her neighbor for a lesson in Japanese cooking. New vocabulary and phrases for preparing the ingredients of a traditional sukiyaki meal are introduced. Words essential in the kitchen are taught and their uses are explained.
Mr. Kobayashi reviews the main points and elaborates on patterns in the Japanese language. He then explains how to describe tasks performed in sequence. Students are given a chance to try out their own sentences, and viewers are taught more points of Japanese grammar. Mr. Kobayashi then invites one of the students for a private session to learn some of the many intricacies of counting in Japanese. Kaori shows her photos of the ways of measuring rice and sake, and ends this video lesson with some tips on the proper and polite use of chopsticks.
Each DVD can be viewed straight through or in separate chapters, allowing access to individual segments for helpful repetition and easy learning.
