Difficult to Recommend, A Shame to Miss

by -

I really enjoy collections of shorts whether completely disparate (such as Short Piece or Memories) or bound by a theme (such as Robot Carnival, or The Animatrix).

The shorter, collected format allows creators to truly experiment resulting in incredibly creative and wildly inventive visuals, stories, and settings, however, this same format can, at times, result in wildly uneven quality.

Genius Party and it's successor, Genius Party BEYOND (collected together here) occasionally achieves great heights and has more than a few stumbles. It is good? That will very much depend on the viewer and your tastes and expectations.

That having been said, I can promise you that it provides an experience which is wholly and utterly unique, creative, and memorable. It is at times beautiful, inspiring, absolutely incomprehensible, and even exhausting, yet never fails to be an interesting glimpse into the minds of the talented creators assembled.

Collection of shorts by Innovative Directors/Creators

by

I personally like anthology films such as aforementioned Memories, Robot Carnival, Batman: Gotham Knights, and A Short Piece (which I own but haven't watched yet!).
Sometimes the experimental shorts are easier to watch than experimental FEATURE-length films.
I've watched films by Studio 4C but they're just not my cup of tea story or design-wise. This compilation is NOT like those from the sense you're getting small doses of experimental animation within a short length which is easier to digest. Experimental by its nature is nonconventional and doesn't always hold to established norms of storytelling or doesn't really have a plot which can be off-putting to many people.
If you've liked ANY of the compilations myself and another reviewer mentioned, then I'd give this disc and try it out. I probably would split the films over 2 days watching but you might be happily surprised...

Essential Anthology for All Anime Fans

by -

This is an essential collection for anime fans of all genres: it's got action, heart, mind blowing animation, and pathos. You'll probably see work from your favorite directors here, but in a different, more experimental light, trying things they often wouldn't get the chance to in series or features. Highly recommended.
