About Galaxy Express 999 Blu-ray

Galaxy Express 999: The Movie was directed by Rintaro.

Galaxy Express 999 is the name of a train which travels through space, beginning at Megalopolis Station on one end of the galaxy and ending at Andromeda on the other. But the Galaxy Express is more than just a train, it's also a metaphor for life itself, with passengers constantly boarding, debarking, and dreaming along the way. Tetsuro Hoshino is a youth who'll give anything to board the Three-Nine,including a promise to accompany a mysterious woman named Maetel all the way to Andromeda, the planet where, she tells him, he can get a free machine body to avenge the cruel death of his mother.

It truly was a journey.

This brings back a lot of good memories I was in high school when I discovered Galaxy Express 999 the blu-ray for this and the sequel is definitely a big improvement when compared to the DVD that released by Eastern Star years ago both the video and sound were clear and crisp. As for the movie itself the animation still holds up fairly well considering that it was made in the 70’s and the tone kind of reminds you of Star Wars, the classic one not the one owned by Disney, while still being it own original thing and the theme of the story really hits home about growing up and the fleeting preciousness of youth especially when you get older. I can see why this would be considered a classic during the time it was made and still sort of is. I would recommend this to anyone who is fan of Leiji Matsumoto or likes space opera/ sci-fi.

Ticket for the 999

My first experience with this film was on the Sci-Fi channel one weekend over 20 years ago. I finally upgraded my aging VHS recording to this Bluray edition and to me this is the definitive way to see the film. I have high appreciation for older and hand drawn animation. This was my intro to Matsumoto’s universe and it made an impact that remains. I feel the quality holds up and story telling matches that of many quality coming of age tales. I wanted to note that included in the Bluray case is a little replica of the 999 train ticket Tetsuro is so desperate for early in the film. It’s a small item but it gave me the silly feels when I realized what it was. Great film from a fascinating universe. Definitely recommend.
