An absolute masterpiece of historical, and animated, storytelling.

If you want to see a film about the Khmer Rouge regime, but don't want something as violent as The Killing Fields, this is the film you're looking for.
Based on a true family's account, and taking place during real events, the story is about a family separated when the Khmer Rouge take over Cambodia. As they work throughout the regime in the concentration camps, their only two goals are to survive and to find their son. They encounter characters who are compassionate and cruel, and either help or hinder them in their goal. Much like its setting, this is a sad film, grounded in the tragic reality of its time, but well worth the watch.
Everyone should see this film. It cuts away from all of the violence, so if you want to give your kids a history lesson, it's safe for them to watch, too.
