Quirky but entertaining old-fashioned Anime with many surprises.

by

FLYING PHANTOM SHIP is old-school Japanese animation in its campy, explosive glory. That is to say, it's not a GREAT movie by modern standards, but it is an interesting early chapter in Anime's rich history. Best appreciated as a sort of B-movie, this film packs plot twist after plot twist in the course of its hour-long running time and offers surprisingly thoughtful commentary on the dangers of propaganda and consumerism. The highlight of this film is an explosive sequence where a giant robot attacks a city while military tanks attempt to stop it. This scene was animated by a young Hayao Miyazaki, in one of his earliest efforts. Video game fans also take note: Yoichi Kotabe, who would later go on to join Nintendo, also contributes some characters for one scene.
