Dark, philosophical sci fi done right

by

The series includes beautiful animation and detailed backgrounds. There is not an overabundance of action scenes, but when there are they are fluid and relevant to the plot. The violence is limited and there are few graphic scenes which makes watching it more accessible for younger audiences or those put off by images of excessive gore. The character designs are well thought out and stylish in a somewhat post-apocalyptic, Gothic fashion. The plot can be slow at times and some parts may require re-watching, but the concepts, themes, and vocabulary are thought-provoking. The characters grow on you, and there is always another mystery to be unraveled. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys the sci-fi or mystery genre and doesn't mind slow pacing at times and doesn't need everything to be explained fully.

The only series I have seen as of now that is similar to this series in nature is Casshern Sins, although I have read that it is comparable to Texhnolyze and Serial Experiments Lain.

Other review - stars vs write up? Weirdness!

by

They gave it 2 stars, yet submitted a well done and reasonably "approving" written review. These basically contradict each other so, if you use my stars and their description as it's actually, dead on the money, heh!

Ergo Proxy is very good; while it can be slow it is for a reason. Mostly however, it's merely due to the overall pace of ANY, good cerebral story - they can't run at a 1000mph & expect viewers to track & accurately understand everything being woven into the series' layered and complex fabric. It's always building but never leaves anything hanging or open ended. And though it's not "action packed" there is more than enough to contribute to the overall excellence. EP is ABSOLUTELY a cerebral series and requires a little patience. But the payoff for that patience is an excellent story you won't regret taking the time to watch & enjoy. Recommended for every collection!

Something dark and intriguing

by -

Ergo Proxy is definitely not for everyone. It's subject matter is very scattered, and what the show is trying to convey can be very difficult to figure out. Many people have different reactions and feelings after finishing the show, but almost everyone is left somewhat confused and in a void. This qualifies the show for a re-watch that will help fill the void, but will still require some interpretation of the viewer to really make sense of the extremely vague and mysterious journey that is Ergo Proxy. If you want something slow and surreal, this is a great world to visit.

Ergo Proxy... I think therefore I am.

by

Ergo Proxy is one of those kinds of anime that you'll either love or hate. As for me, I love it. This is dystopian cyber punk done to an artistic level that is beyond belief. There is almost a film noir feel to the animation, which is so intriguing that it is like its own character. You'll feel extreme empathy for main char. Vincent law, and you'll be mesmerized with other main char. Re-L. And you can't help but love the little android piko. If you like anime that makes you think, you'll love Ergo Proxy. I think therefore I am. (premise of the series).... Come and save me. (Kiri opening credits song)

Wow

by -

This was stunning - exactly the kind of show for folks who seek high re-watch value, as after finishing 'Ergo Proxy' I immediately played episode one and two again, just to pick up a lot of the hints I missed.

Definitely for fans of the dystopian genre with the grimy, bleak future it portrays - but there's a suspense feel too. And beyond those elements, there's quite a lot going re: subtext, often too subtly, but it mostly holds together courtesy of great characters and some really impressive world-building - and when all is revealed, wow, what intense cruelty. (Having said that, this isn't a massive downer-of-a-series either).

Finally, I should mention the fantastic and often haunting OST - grab 'Ergo Proxy' if you're looking for a dark but engrossing series.
