About El-Hazard The Magnificent World OVA 1+2 Collection Blu-ray

El-Hazard: The Magnificent World OVA 1+2 Collection contains episodes 1-7 of the first OVA directed by Hiroki Hayashi and episodes 1-4 of the second OVA directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki.

Ancient ruins have been discovered beneath Makoto’s high school, but he has bigger things to deal with. He has evidence that the conniving Student Council President, Jinnai, is guilty of election fraud! But before Makoto gets his chance to testify, a strange light from the ruins transports Makoto, Jinnai, Jinnai’s sister Nanami, and their history teacher Fujisawa, to a mysterious land... the Magnificent World of El-Hazard.

There, these four unwitting travelers find a world split by forces of good and evil, where giant insects known as the Bugrom battle against humanity, and beautiful priestesses use magic to harness the power of the elements. Nothing in El-Hazard seems to make sense, but one thing is clear: they’re caught in the middle of a fantastical war with no way home!

Special Features: Clean Openings, Clean Closings, Art Galleries.

Worth it for the first OVA alone. Fans of 90s anime, give it a shot.

The visuals and audio are both solid. The first OVA is a fun and tightly woven stranger in a strange land kind of story. The pacing will keep you hooked. The dub is painfully cringe, especially the antagonist's laugh. The second OVA is an obvious drop in technical quality. The jokes are also a bit ridiculous compared to the first. It might be worth for mega fans who want to spend more time with these characters, but I found the second OVA to be relatively weak. Thankfully the first ends with a sense of closure so the second isn't necessary. The art is very much in the spirit of 90s. This wasn't the peak of 90s anime by any means...but it was better than average. I really enjoyed it. I think fans of 90s anime should be happy to have this in their collection. I think less than 30 bucks for the first OVA alone is worthwhile. Enjoy.

El-Hazard is a genuine classic from the golden era of OVAs

The only downside to this release is sadly that TMW2 is only an upscale from the same tape based source as prior releases.
There are some residual artifacts that remain despite some attempts to clean them up. Such as dot crawl, rainbow artifacts and some line work gets a little smoothed over. But overall holds up well due to the very hit bitrate (30+Mbps)

Very likeable (Although Princess Fatora is a bit insufferable) and well written characters (With beautiful designs by Kazuto Nakazawa that give it that trademark 90s AIC look) and great music that is instantly familiar from Nagaoka Seikou to anyone who has heard his other works of the time period.

If you like Tenchi Muyo or any other anime by AIC from the period.
If you like 90s anime, buy this.
If you hate the contrived modern Isekai anime, buy this.

The strongest version of the story

by

This is the best way to experience El Hazard. If you only saw The Wanderers(the TV series), this is the same story, but without all the filler. Certain characters have much more of a role, and the animation quality is top shelf. While it was nice to see some characters have more presence in the TV version, and some problematic elements are toned down, Ifurita is FAR more interesting here, and the love story between her and Makoto is much stronger than her being reduced to ditzy comic relief in The Wanderers. The OAV ending is as close to perfect as you can get, far more romantic than comedy.
