About The Eccentric Family Premium Edition Blu-ray

This premium edition of The Eccentric Family contains episodes 1-13 plus a full-color 64-page hardcover art book with episode guides, character info, and illustrations.

In modern day Kyoto, humans live in the city, tengus take to the sky, and tanukis roam the earth. One such tanuki is Yasaburo, the third son of Soichiro Shimogamo, famed tanuki leader who met his end far too early at the hands of a group of humans and their year-end banquet hot pot. Yasaburo has since embraced his "fool's blood" and strives for a happy, carefree life. But between taking care of his old tengu master Akadama-sensei, avoiding the life-threatening advances of the beautiful human Benten, dealing with his dangerously stupid twin cousins, and avoiding becoming a hot pot himself in the next year-end banquet, the young tanuki has his proverbial work cut out for him!

The Eccentric Family

by -

Kyouto has three coexisting tribes the humans who live in the city, tengus who rule the air, and the mischievous foolish shapeshifting tanuki of the earth. This is the story of the Shimogamo family of tanukis, how they lost their patriarch, their relationships with tengus and humans, and their feud with the rival Ebisugawa family. Supernatural fantasy and Kyouto in glorious combination. Gorgeous background art and fluid animation combine with distinctive character designs and an engaging story by the author of the Tatami Galaxy. Well worth watching and re-watching.

A Wonderful Premium Edition For Its Price

This is a review of the physical content rather than of the show, since there are plenty of reviews of The Eccentric Family elsewhere. Suffice it to say the series is excellent.

The outer box is a nice size and fairly thick. I was sad to see a scratch on the box's spine, but it wasn't bad enough to return. Handling aside, the box is great.

The box set contains two fairly cheap, plastic DVD-size cases for the Blu-rays. The image choices and discs are nice though. The highlight of this edition is the accompanying "handbook," with character designs, artwork, descriptions of locations and their real-life counterparts in Kyoto, as well as P.A. Works staff commentaries on various elements in the anime. The book, while good-looking, is a little stiff and probably not bound very well.

Overall, at a ~$60 price point, this edition is a worthwhile premium edition purchase, especially on sale. Though not perfect, you're getting more for your money here than you will from most anime releases.
