Film fell short of expectations

by -

The 3DCG animation was good, it flowed smoothly, but there was this 'claymation' vibe to some scenes at times. The musical score was also good; especially, the witches band music as catchy / different. Unfortunately, I even became fidgety while watching this movie and the ending was very unsatisfying.

From my perspective, the young protagonist lacked the usual likable characteristics of past Ghibli films. Earwig came across as too bratty, and despite the wicked witch theme, Earwig applying magic to put both adoptive parents in their place sent the wrong message to me. And while both Earwig and Witch do reach a mutual understanding at the end...the narrative/messaging could have been done better.

Three stars, as even though I liked the animation and musical score, I am knocking off two stars for story lacking the 'magic' and 'wonderment' of past Ghibli films.
