Eastern Star, Please keep licensing OVAs/Movies from the 80s and 90s!

Demon City Shinjuku is yet another 80s OVA/Movie that deserved a Blu Ray release in the USA. Sure this can be a little cheesy at times, but that is what makes it so great! It has demons, violence, blood and gore, and hilarious profanity at times. Please keep releasing these kinds of titles Easter Star. I already pre-ordered Wicked City.

I am glad this made it to Blu-Ray, but I'm sorry but it's not a great movie.

First some positives. This movie looks very good on Blu-Ray, the Japanese voice acting is good, the opening scene immediately sucks you in, and there is a lot of material here that could make a great setting. Visually, there are a few nice scenes (I thought the playground scene was beautiful)

However. From a story standpoint, it's all downhill from the opening scene. Character after character is introduced that don't get the backstory they deserve, or do things that don't make sense. Overall the story lacks cohesiveness, even though you feel like it is close to being a solid movie. Like if someone spent a little more time in production this could have been really good. And then the ending is simply anticlimactic and the protagonist has no real development (I'm being fair, no development at all). I watched a little of the English dub; it's not any worse than you'd expect from this time period, which is a nice way of saying its bad but not the worst.

One of the best anime of its time.

One of those gem back in the 80s this anime is a must watch. I remember watching this on the syfy channel late at night and have been wanting to add it to my anime collection ever since. So glad it got released on bluray. Bought it the moment it was released and watched it on my TV the moment I received it. Everything about the movie is exactly like how I remembered it. The story, characters, monsters, settings, actions, it's all as I remembered.

Keep in mind this anime came out in the 80s and dose not compared to newer anime in the 21st century but it's one of the highly rated anime of its time.

Influential and Unpretentious Action

by

First time I caught Demon City Shinjuku was on scifi channel before the heyday of anime and manga in the US. I've loved this movie ever since. After seeing some pretty good dvd releases, I'm thrilled to have access to a quality blu ray from Discotek. The smoothness of the video image and sharpness of contrasts, plus the heft of audio, all add up to quite a strong offering.

Keep in mind the story is straightforward. You'll have more fun if you go in looking for a fun viewing experience that doesn't warp your mind. I appreciate that in other shows and movies, but not every story needs to do only that one thing to be good.

Lately, I'm seeing an artistic line of anime evolution from this style (shared with Wicked City, etc.) to Yu Yu Hakusho. Take that observation for what you will. Anyway, I rewatch this movie plenty enough to recommend it to any fan of action anime.
