About BLAME! Manga Volume 2

BLAME! Volume 2 features story and art by Tsutomu Nihei.

The Administration contacts Kyrii and Cibo, encouraging them to keep searching for the Net Terminal Gene which will stop the City from its intractable, chaotic growth. The Admin also warns them of the autonomous Safeguards, vicious entities that attempt to kill off any humans who access the Netsphere without the required Net Terminal Gene. Kyrii is attacked, and a group of humans who have settled on the outskirts of Toha Heavy Industries comes to his aid. Kyrii awakens with a newfound ability to read his surroundings, which allows him mere seconds to fend off an attacker lurking among the humans settlement. In the ensuing battle, Cibo makes a heavy sacrifice, but not before learning a startling truth about her traveling companion…

The dark gritty cyberpunk masterpiece continues

by -

These new full size master editions really lend themselves to Nihei’s massive architectural art style. Looking at these grand, intricate, yet sparse landscape that he creates really do make you feel small! Combined with intense action sequences, the sparsity of dialogue (I love that he trusts the reader is smart enough to put things together), the gritty story, Blame vol 2 is a worthy addition to your bookcase.

Not only is the story enjoyably unique and delivered with spectacular art, but it instantly makes a statement on any bookshelf you put it on!

Monochromatic Masterwork

by

Out of gunmetal detritus and blemished alabaster Nihei jaggedly renders a monochromatic masterwork. This a near hedonistic experience for anyone attuned to the aesthetic appeal of ruin, devastation, and dystopia. Nihei’s creativity is at times almost imposing, it’s impressive how many different kinds of discarded future he populates the world of BLAME! with.

Storytelling here is minimalistic, deliberately lacking in all but the most character motivated exposition for example. Not merely as a function of mystery, but as a way of embedding you in the world’s cold indifference to the people inside it. Still, there can be frustration in this as it almost forces you to find the stakes and drama for yourself. That the ambiguity is perhaps overplayed is a forgivable flaw. You want to dig into this, not merely be swept along by it.

The writing is not all it probably could be, so I thought of making this a 4/5, but no, this is a 5/5 to me.
