Beuaty and the Beast + Social Media + Internet Bullying = A Real Treat.
by Jon T.
BELLE is arguably Mamoru Hosoda’s magnum opus as of now, and that is saying a lot. It's an imaginative reinterpretation of "Beauty and the Beast" minus romantic undertones, and perhaps deliberately, this film does pay homage to Disney’s now famous animated classic. But BELLE takes a different direction and also draws into its mix a withdrawn, depressed high school teenager with a golden voice, relationships, and even social networks! The latter especially is stunningly realized in the form of a virtual reality world of some sorts called U, with eye popping visuals and dazzling colors. Above all, the movie is both a work of art and even has oodles of heart. That, in addition to another stellar dub from the folks at NYAV Post (with lead actress Kylie McNeill giving a particularly amazing turn — especially her singing moments) make this yet another modern treat for Anime fans.
Welcome to the Virtual World of U

I purchased the exclusive LE steelbook of "Belle" as I've enjoyed the many memorable films by Director Hosoda.
"Belle" surprised me for containing more elements than simply a re-telling of Disney's "Beauty And The Beast". The virtual world of U is stunning animation, and the musical score is nicely done throughout the movie with the final song by Suzu "A Million Miles Away" sounding good in either English or Japanese audio.
The film featured unexpected virtual action scenes, the struggles of Suzu's life in the real world, while escaping into the virtual world of U is captivating. The film is also filled with drama/suspense as Suzu once meeting the mysterious Dragon in U, tries to find and save him from danger in the real world.
Another good film by Mamoru Hosoda and a worthy addition to my animated film collection.
Technically beautiful but cold and lifeless film.

BELLE gets points for being a beautiul film but the film is overall a misfire from Hosoda. Its storyline is a meandering mess, devoid of any heart, and even rips off of Beauty and the Beast rather lazily. Yes, Belle's English VA can sing. That doesn't mean the dub is good. It's just another stale, emotionally flat, monotonous, overacted mess, easily inferior to the (always) superior Japanese version. Bad call on GKIDS' part. It's such a disappointment considering Hosoda's genius. He needs to do better.
Lend me your voice...

I had a few problems with pacing issues toward the end, but otherwise BELLE is yet another gorgeous winner from Hosoda. It's creative, imaginative, and full of heart. And even though I am traditionally a subtitle purist (although I DO like dubs), I have to go out of my way and state the following: the dub on this film is superior to the Japanese version. Kylie McNeill just knocks it out as the title character. Don't get me wrong the Japanese version is good, but there is something about the dub that just exceeds its source material. Either way, the film is both a visual treat and an emotionally moving journey. Don't miss it.
