About Battle Athletes TV Series and OVA Blu-ray

Battle Athletes TV Series and OVA contains anime episodes 1-26 of the TV series directed by Katsuhito Akiyama and OVAs 1-6 directed by Kazuhiro Ozawa, all in standard definition on a Blu-ray disc.

Ravines! Cliffs! Minefields! Just a regular midterm for Antarctic Training School!

Welcome to the year 4998, where the most important sporting event for humanity has become the athletic competition for the Cosmo Beauty title. Since only three students from each training school may advance to the University Satellite to compete for this title, we find the midterms are complicated by cut-throat competition between the star athletes, and underhanded deviousness from the sneaky slackards.

However, for our heroine, Akari, the real problem is that she just can't fail quietly! If it wasn't bad enough that the competitions are televised, Akari is also the daughter of the most famous Cosmo Beauty winner ever, Tomoe Mido! When you combine her famous mom with her bad luck dad, Akari always winds up a focal point in whatever event is going on. Fortunately, good friends and constant practice are a sure remedy so there may be hope for her yet!

A great collection all on 1 disc

Battle Athletes is one of my favorite series from the 90s. While it's by no means a masterpiece, this show is just a lot of fun. Far better than the new "restart" series that recently appeared. Some of the comedy doesn't hold up so well in this day and age--particularly the character stereotypes--but its still a nice show with a lot of heart.

I bought this to replace my DVD collection (this 1 Blu-ray disc replaces 11 DVDs). While it is still presented in standard definition, I can tell that the quality is slightly improved over the original. This new version is progressive scan and doesn't have the dot crawl, rainbows, and compression artifacts that were present in the DVDs.

This Blu-ray also includes a music video, and includes the original credit sequence from the final episode (which was missing from the dvd release).

A Gem of a Classic

The first thing you should note is that the OVA's and TV series are completely different from one another.

The OVA's are the original story and focus more on a somewhat serious story following the troubles of Akari. How she tries to uphold her mother's legacy while forging her own.

The TV series was created after the OVA's, but leans way too heavily on comedy and stereotypes rather than storytelling. It also changes Akari from a strong goal focused character, to a shy timid girl who would rather hide. The modern reboot retells the TV series' point of view as well.

It's a great show that deserves love. And if you want a more serious story, the OVA's are the only place to get it.
