Some reshuffling compared to the old Bandai DVD sets

by

The 3 old Bandai sets consist of:
- Crest of the Stars
- Banner of the Stars
- Banner of the Stars II + Passage of the Stars

The new Funimation sets consist of:
- Crest of the Stars + Passage of the Stars
- Banner of the Stars + Banner of the Stars II + Banner of the Stars III

So if you already own the Bandai sets and want to add the Banner of the Stars III missing from it to complete your collection, you either end up keeping your whole Bandai set and getting the Funimation Banner set (duplicating Banner and Banner II) or getting both Funimation sets to to completely replace your whole Bandai sets because they shuffled Passage to the other set. Quite annoying. :(

One of the best space operas I've ever seen

by

I'm so incredibly happy that they were able to include the Banner of the Stars III. Been looking (unsuccessfully) for a copy that I could import for years.

As for the actual review. Great space opera with strong characters. You know that there's a lot more going on behind the scenes in the war but the primary focus is on the crew Basroil and their role within the war. Its not just about the crew learning to trust each other but they even have to learn to trust the other officers within the fleet in order to maximize everyone's chances at survival.

When I first got the series, starting with Crest of the Stars, I though it would be a Gundam-esqe space war with fleets duking it out. I was surprised for the better to see how much character development their was and really starting rooting for the primarily characters of Jinto and Lafiel and their ever evolving relationship by the end.

A great Sci-Fi Serial

What I really liked about "Crest to the Stars" and "Banner of the Stars" is the total strengths of its character development in this Sci-Fi classic series. Primarily, the relationship between Lafiel (Abh Princess who now is Captain of Basroil) and Jinto (Human Noble who becomes supply officer aboard the Basroil) and their continued ties/friendship/interactions brought forth by war, diplomacy, and the bureaucracy involved that highlights this anime series...and recommended for older audiences who seek more than just an action-based narrative.

Another aspect I enjoyed is the story focuses on the Abh perspective on a war against Humankind, which was not only different but invigorating to me.

With "Legends of the Galactic Heroes" considered the ultimate space opera, then this series should be labled the second best space opera produced. Enjoy in 480p / 4:3 format.
