About Azumanga Daioh Complete Collection DVD Sentai Selects

For the members of Miss Yukari's English Class, a typical day may be just a little unusual. Part of that's due to Miss Yukari herself, whose teaching style (and personal ethics) tend to be odd, improvisational and spontaneous, but her students are just as unconventional: There's 10-year-old Chiyo, still at the top of her class after skipping five grades, and her opposite Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga, whose poor grades are surpassed only by her horrific skill at sports. Then there's Tomo, a competitive slacker who puts excessive energy into doing very little, and Koyomi, whose surprising maturity is compromised by a malevolent sense of humor. Tall, statuesque Sakaki's athletic exterior hides both unexpected shyness and a most unfortunate obsession with cats, while tiny Kaori's heart is mainly obsessed with Sakaki. They may all seem like perfectly normal girls on the outside, but even their most mundane activities magically become the most extraordinary adventures as they learn all about life, the universe and affairs of the heart in AZUMANGA DAIOH!

Not for Everyone

So I did not buy this from rightstuf (I know blasphemy, but I was young and didn't know about this site) but I do own the complete series and I have watched it (quite a few times). Personally this is one of my favorites for the type of anime it is, but with that said it's definitely not for all audiences.
So disclaimer said, let's get down to the nitty gritty. This story chronicals the lives of high school girls and their friendship through high school (oh summer breaks included!). It thrusts you into a world which you see friendships develop over time and see the bonds strengthen, but if you think it's just a dramatic shoujo.... Think again! There's lots of comic relief in it.
I happened to love this anime because it has that touching nature of friendship and that craziness comedy interjections (both in dream and reality for their world). If by chance you enjoyed things like, Abenobashi, Love Hina even (no it's not a harem anime, but it has its highlights), I'd give it ago.

comedy to make you smile

Azumanga Daioh is a very fun comedy that will get you to smile, and not just the first time you watch the series. It has a large cast, but none of the characters is neglected, and each is very memorable different from the other characters.

The story isn't complex, it follows the every day lives/adventures of friends over 3 years of high school. The series is cute/moe without having the staleness found in other comedies and is something I've enjoyed watching several times over the years since it first came out. It's rare to find a comedy that stands the test of time, and Azumanga Daioh is what I would consider a classic. I'm glad this license was picked up and I was finally able to buy a copy of the series.

Hilarious! Fun! Sweet! Fun! Adorable! Fun(Said That Already...)!

Thank You,Sentai, for re-releasing this anime comedy masterpiece!
At first glance, Azumanga Daioh seems like a show about nothing in particular, just the day-to-day lives of a handful of high-school girls. But this is what makes the show so much fun; the more you see and learn about these girls and watch as their friendships develop, the funnier and sweeter it gets--and we're talking side-splitting funny! Yes, Azumanga Daioh is a 'high school' show--but its about friends who become a kind of family. It's not a romantic comedy, nor is it over-the-top comedic hijinks a la 'School Rumble';this series features character-driven humor designed to make you laugh hard and leave you with a warm fuzzy glow. You Won't Regret This Purchase!

You Cannot Go Wrong

One of, if not, the best Slice of Life of all time. If you're a fan of School Rumble, Aria the Animation, Nichijou, Lucky Star and Cromartie High School, say hello to the godmother of slice of life.

Azumanga is about 6 high school girls who live their lives trying to survive the daily terrors of school, though what separates this from being an ordinary high school comedy is Azumanga knows how to deliver jokes and deliver them well. There are no cheap jokes in this comedy, all jokes are fit for each situation and they know how to deliver their punch lines to it's full potential. All of the characters are entertaining in their own right, and the supporting characters make everything that much more fun. Overall, a very enjoyable comedy that set the bar for other high school comedies 14 years ago.

The Queen of Slice-of-Life

I grew up in the 90s watching anime like Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, Pokémon, and others without knowing they were anime, but that changed when I discovered AzuManga Daioh! AzuManga is my first manga and it's what started me to love anime and manga. It's still my favorite manga series ever to this day. Personally, I prefer the manga on this one, but the anime still provides endless laughs for years to come. It's truly a classic. I've seen a few other SoL anime like Lucky Star, Nichijou, and A Channel, but Azu reins supreme. My friends and I in school each took a character from this show and that was our nicknames (I was Osaka). It was so much fun nearly 2 decades ago and it's still fun today. I recommend this to anyone who likes SoL or anything humorous or silly in general.

My favorite

Frankly, I love this show. A pure pleasure to watch. No real story, but it doesn't need one. It focuses on the characters, as it should. Oh, Also the comedy. It's hilarious.
I prefer the anime over the manga actually, and that is likely due to the music.
The music is absolutely perfect. It somehow establishes a real sense of childhood. It is just perfect. I believe it was the kuricorder orchestra.
The dub is really good too.
I really have nothing bad to say about this show. I personally love it.

So Cute You'll Need Insulin

I never saw this on its first domestic release. In fact the only reason I'd heard of it was because it was name-dropped in those old Anime Network promos on various DVDs, When I saw it was coming out again, I had to order it.

I generally prefer action and/or slapstick, so I didn't know what to expect from a "slice-of-life" show. I'll say I was pleasantly surprised. The classmates all have their own little quirks: For example, Chiyo is the child prodigy, and she's eternally optimistic; Sakaki suffers silently because she wants a pet but can't keep one; and "Osaka", while well-intentioned, is about as bright as a nightlight bulb; etc. Then there are the surreal moments, such as the girls' various day-dreams, where you begin to wonder...about Chiyo's Dad. Last but not least is the show's earworm of an opening theme, Soramimi Cake. I know I'm hooked when I don't skip that chapter...

If you're looking for something to satisfy your anime sweet-tooth, give this a try.

Classic Comedy

Man, it's hard to review Azumanga Daioh. So much of it is caught up in its early 2000s vintage, right at the peak of the anime boom in the US and UK. Every time I watch the series again, I expect for it not to hold up, to show its age and fall flat.

Of course, it never does. The humor is excellently paced, alternating between long-focus character-based gags and quick situational quips. The characters themselves are well-written, with interesting hooks that aren't just strawmen to be knocked down for laughs. It's not as beautiful or as savvy as your typical comedy anime these days, but it's more satisfying, overall.

He loves school girls

A review for this is hard I often struggle explaining this anime to friends. Its a comedy about a buncha high school girls and their time together. That's pretty much it nothing crazy happens just a really funny enjoyable slice of life anime. It can be slow paced but the characters are so enjoyable and the comedy so good. Just get it its all I can say.

I discovered this anime about ten years ago because I stumbled upon it by accident. I remember watching the first six or seven episodes and laughing hysterically at all of their crazy antics. This anime can be appreciated by anyone who ever struggled to fit in during the high school years or if you have crazy friends like the main cast. I think this is an underappreciated anime but it's one of the few good comedies out there that doesn't try too hard. You either love this anime or you don't.

fun easy to watch anime!
