About Ayako Manga

Ayako features story and art by Osamu Tezuka.

Initially set in the aftermath of World War II, Ayako focuses its attention on the Tenge clan, a once-powerful family of landowners living in a rural community in northern Japan. The war and American occupation have begun to erode the fabric that binds them all together. The increasing influence of political, economic and social change begins to tear into the many Tenge siblings, while a strange marriage agreement creates resentment between the eldest son and his sire.

When the family seems to have completely fallen apart, they decide to turn their collective rage on what they believe to be the source of their troubles: the newest member of the Tenge family, the youngest sister Ayako.

Tezuka's most unusual story

From the Godfather of Manga and Anime, a very different sort of story. A story about some terrible people, some who wanted to make amends for their terrible choices and some who wanted only to avoid responsibility for theirs. And the innocent who paid terrible prices that she did not have a chance to understand were not normal to pay.

There are no "Atomic Age Heroes" (Astro Boy) no anthropomorphic animals (Kimba) Not much fantasy at all. But there are people. And even the terrible ones come across as living people making choices in times beyond their control.

There are a lot of bad things that happen in this story. Often to people who do not deserve them, but sometimes to those that do. In a lot of ways, that's what makes this story draw you in. Heroes don't win, Villains aren't all crushed, but people survive, and that's it's own kind of hopeful element.
