Good story, but the execution could be a lot better

In some respects, this is the best entry in the series so far. Myne has finally developed an emotional connection to her family, Lutz becomes a stronger person, and the story is moving forward in some interesting directions, whether Myne really wants it to or not.
Unfortunately, the author's lack of skill is put on display several times. Scenes that should be emotional are instead weighed down by bad writing and an over-reliance on sound effects to show what characters are feeling. Also, the story's flow is terrible and feels unfocused for the bulk of the volume.
I definitely plan on reading Part 2, but this is one of those series that's best read with light novel glasses on. The story is interesting, but, as is the case with way too many light novels, the writing isn't any good.
