About Asadora! Manga Volume 1

Asadora! manga volume 1 features story and art by Naoki Urasawa.

A deadly typhoon, a mysterious creature and a girl who won’t quit.

In 2020, a large creature rampages through Tokyo, destroying everything in its path.

In 1959, Asa Asada, a spunky young girl from a huge family in Nagoya, is kidnapped for ransom—and not a soul notices. When a typhoon hits Nagoya, Asa and her kidnapper must work together to survive. But there’s more to her kidnapper and this storm than meets the eye.

When Asa’s mother goes into labor yet again, Asa runs off to find a doctor. But no one bats an eye when she doesn’t return—not even as a storm approaches Nagoya. Forgotten yet again, Asa runs into a burglar and tries to stop him on her own, a decision that leads to an unlikely alliance.

A pilot, a kid, and a hopeful Olympian!

I love the idea so far. The art is great as always from Naoki. A little forgotten girl and a former war pilot makes for a really interesting main cast. Can't wait to see where it goes!

Good execution so far

As is inherent with other Urasawa works, Asadora starts off with a bit of mystery to stage the future story elements. The story has elements of fictional history by using a post WWII setting and focuses on Asa, a headstrong girl who lives as part of a large family. I liked how the setting was both accurate and woven seamlessly with the kaiju theme, something that is hinted at early on in the story. Unlike other Urasawa works, this one's not too gritty and actually quite wholesome compared to a work like Monster.

It's too early for me to see whether or not I truly enjoy the story unless it progresses on, but so far, I enjoy the story!
