Growing Up in Neo-Venezia: Characterization that Matures

by

In slice-of-life stories one of the most satisfying things is seeing how characters, rather than remain static, grow and mature over time. It gives you the sense that the world in itself is changing. And here was really when I started to see ARIA's beauty, because this was a journey slowly but surely progressing.

The most vivid character growth was with Aika. Her keeping her hair short after her accident was brilliant. It would have been easy for the plot to just keep her appearance the same, but instead, we get a visible reminder of her character growth, and a sign that the story as a whole is shifting and changing over the course of the journey.

I do feel that the split between Natural's 2 "halves" DVD-wise is troublesome, since it's really all 1 season. And it's disappointing that the subplot with Ai's sick grandmother never actually goes anywhere. But overall, this is another wonderful step in ARIA's journey. Can't wait to watch the dub!
