Akira 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray/DVD

Akira is an amazing story with outstanding characters then aha is darker or how you say bloody n differently than the movie I've seen it 3 times. I just wished it could be like a TV series

Akira is one of the most commonly cited anime from fans that will describe it as their entry point for the hobby, and with good reason. Beneath the grimy, bloody, hyper violent (but beautifully animated) exterior lies an intelligent, cerebral and though provoking work that will leave an indelible mark. Funimation didn't pull any punches on this release and both dub and sub were given equal attention. This film has never looked or sounded better. Fans of neo-noir, science fiction, and gritty 80s anime will not be disappointed by Katsuhiro Otomo's (Freedom, Roujin-Z, Steamboy, Neo-Tokyo) masterwork.

AKIRA is definitely a movie with an extensive eye to detail and fluidity of animation, the quality of which has held up well with the passage of time. The story of members of a biker gang getting embroiled in a government project dealing with psychic powers, AKIRA mixes cool action scenes with some interesting concepts and visuals. A strong choice for any anime fan.

Anime licensors in general and FUNimation in particular are prone to releasing "anniversary editions" and the like that are sloppy repackages of existing releases, sometimes even with extras cut—see, for instance, the latest Ghost in the Shell Blu-ray release. The twenty-fifth anniversary release of Akira is nothing like that, as far as I can tell. The windowboxing that was in the Bandai Visual release is gone, but the visual clarity appears unchanged, and there's a broader array of dub tracks and featurettes, for those who use these releases to access the memories of watching some cut-down VHS version of the film in their youth. Suffice to say, this is the definitive version, for now.

The film condenses a LOT of material into two hours; not surprising, since writer/director Katsuhiro Otomo's long-running manga series was still being written after its 1988 release. This epic, violent, mind-melting slice of animated history has terrific visuals, an amazing soundtrack and, of course, the sci-fi tinged story that introduced many to Kaneda, Tetsuo and company.
Video quality is slightly better than Bandai's 2009 Blu-ray: the image is no longer "picture-boxed" and the colors appear more well-defined. It's the same 2001 master. On the audio front, we get two excellent DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio versions of the original Japanese track and the 2001 Pioneer English dub, as well as a new DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio version of the older 1998 Streamline English dub.
Funimation's 25th Anniversary Edition is definitely worth a purchase if you don't own "Akira" on Blu-ray

I really don't know if it's possible for a better home video release of AKIRA than this.

Picture is 10/10, sound is 10/10, all the old Bandai extras are included, the Japanese voice track, Streamline dub (Cam Clarke) and Pioneer dub (Johnny Yong Bosch) are all included.

The release of AKIRA was a watershed moment in anime, the catalyst for a creative explosion worldwide and the announcement of anime (or "Japanimation" if you're saucy) as a serious art form. Thanks Streamline Video! And Manga Entertainment! And thanks to Funimation for giving us the blu-ray we all deserve!

Akira is one of the holy trinity of anime that you must watch, the others being Ghost in the Shell & Ninja Scroll. Akira came out in 1988 but still looks better than most of today's bland run of the mill anime. What starts off as a gang of school kids on futuristic motorcycles fighting against a gang of clowns quickly leads into a mess of government conspiracy involving young children being experimented on for psychic purposes. Akira is violent, artistic, ahead of it's time, & makes use of all of it's entire medium. It predicted the future in real life, Olympics in Tokyo, Japan 2020. It has a futuristic motorcycle that has REVERSE! There is pill usage & explosions. This 25th anniversary edition blu-ray has multiple language tracks & includes the original Streamline 1989 dub as well as the 2001 Pioneer dub. Of course the Japanese language track is there, sound quality is perfect, video looks nice, & there are plenty of extras to check out. I definitely recommend it, check it out!

The art is great, beats modern stuff by miles, accurately tells the characters but misses out on some important details. For example it leaves out the character that is the namesake of the series, which I feel is pretty important, but it is a movie so it's understandable that they can't add everything. Aside from that its a movie that will keep you entertained and is something that is very memorable
