Remake of the Original

For those who don't know this is the remake of the original 2 OVA collection that was slated to be a 12-episode anime OVA adaptation that was never completed. Due to funding issues this project was released years after originally slated but only produced the first third before being placed on hiatus. It is unlikely that we will see a continuation, so for those individuals who prefer collecting the entirety of a series this is as close as you will probably get.

Overall, the art of the remake is nice and is still worth looking into for those who saw the original version from the 90s.

All about that BL

All about that BL .... except you know how stuff tends be be fairly watered down in the anime (: Otherwise if this genre tickles your fancy definitely give it a look !!

A brief glimpse into what could have been

Ai no Kusabi (the space between) is set in a futuristic world where the population is mostly male, and one's hair and skin color dictates your social position. On the one side are the blondies, favored by Jupiter, the ruling supercomputer. On the other are mongrels, rejected by society. The story follows blondie Iason, mongrel Riki, and their passionate as well as forbidden love affair, which is met with disastrous consequences for all involved.

As stated in another review, this series is a remake of the 1992 OVA series, which itself is based on a series of light yaoi novels by Rieko Yoshihara. The remake, while beautiful, was sadly never completed, and thus we're left with a 4 episode "teaser" of the full story. As such, though AnK is considered a "classic", you're better off with the completed, albeit older, OVA.

Verdict: stream it.

Just enough to pique your interest...

I bought this DVD because the first novel of Ai no Kusabi is so hard to get a hold of and hoped it would cover the first novel's material, but didn't have high expectations. Without giving too many spoilers, I can say that despite the un-chronological approach, I really did end up liking this anime.

My only complaint was that they only gave us four episodes. I wish they'd continued through the whole series!

Japanese language, English subtitles, and a very pretty animation style.

If you've got 120 minutes to spare, don't mind subtitles, have a few bucks to spare, and want an introduction to a new yaoi series, buy it. :)
