A fun, faithful adaptation

by -

For fans of the novels who haven't watched: It's a strong adaptation. It covers the first 4 books, with small adjustments--some minor events left out or altered, that sort of thing. It's faithful to the story and characters.

On the characters: It nails Adachi and I actually prefer the anime version of Shimamura. She comes off as a bit less cold than in the novels. I get frustrated with her personality, but I feel less of that toward her in the anime. But I favor Adachi's character--I adore her, flaws and all--so I have a bias.

For those new to the series: it's a comfortable blend of cute, funny, and one-sided romantic angst. It's not groundbreaking, but it's fun.

It also has the nice quality of feeling somewhat "finished" at the end despite covering less than half of the novels. It has a more "closed" feel than other anime that end mid-source, but it's obviously open for a continuation (and I'd like that).

But I'll never understand what's up with Yashiro.

My favorite Romance Anime

I was pretty new to the Yuri scene, but very open to it and was seeking a good point of entry, and Adachi and Shimamura was by far my favorite one of them all. I have watched some of Bloom into You, but something about this series was so endearing to me. The way these two girls interact is so cute, and having read some of the Light novels, I am happy with this adaptation. The scene that stood out the most to me was when Adachi calls Shimamura, and she literally just says nothing on the phone for 30 seconds almost. As Shimamura asks why she even called, Adachi says she just wanted time with her, even if it's in the form of something as stupid as a silent phone call. This was the cutest thing I have literally ever seen, and if anyone is seeking a new Yuri series, please give this one a look. Also the soundtrack is way too good, you'll know the one track when you hear it.
