You won't understand what's happening unless you read the novels

The first 40 or so minutes of this movie is a recap of the TV series. The other half of the movie is new content. The TV series adapted the first four volumes plus side stories from volume 10. The new content in this movie takes place after volume 25. So unless you plan on reading the Accel World novels, you will not understand what's going on in this movie. Some people on the internet say you should at least read to volume 16 to understand what's happening in this movie.
