07-Ghost 1 features story by Yukino Ichihara and art by Yuki Amemiya.

All Teito Klein wants is to forget his murky past as an orphan and slave and to graduate from Barsburg's military academy with his best friend Mikage. But when an overheard state secret triggers treasonous memories, he's forced to flee from the very empire he once sought to defend!

Deliberately leaving Mikage behind, Teito escapes to the Barsburg Church. There, with the help of its three bishops, he begins to unravel his role in the story of an evil god, seven ghosts, two rival empires, and his own mysterious past.

A deftly crafted story with deep characters

by

07-Ghost could have easily become a mediocre title based on the first few chapters alone, but then it picks up speed and never stops. Main character Teito Klein has a back story that just keeps getting deeper as the story progresses. Sometimes it can be a tad cliché, but it's all forgivable. Multiple supporting characters are also flushed out nicely and expanded upon; Frau, Castor, and Labrador's in particular.

Multiple plot twists turn Teito's world on its head and sometimes those twists threatened to unravel things for me because all they did was pose more questions, but authors Yuki Amemiya and Yukino Ichihara do a great job tying everything up at the end. Speaking of the end, I honestly don't know how the authors could have wrapped things up better, or more satisfactorily, without leaving the readers feeling cheated. Kudos to them! I highly recommend 07-Ghost.
